I need another point of view on who's fault this is and who should rectify .......................please.:)
Sons car went into garage to get water leak fixed, while in there garage found oil-sump was leaking so we had that fixed too.
Got car back and car was billowing smoke:eek: ......took straight back to garage and they say the problem is ...............oil,soaked into the wadding of the heat-sheild ,around the exhaust.
The only way to cure this is to renew the exhaust (at a cost of £234) .........now to my mind they caused the problem when they sorted the sump out and drained the oil all over and into the heat-sheild:rolleyes:
who do you think is responsible and who should rectify the problem...............
please help......seriously miffed with them now

Its the grages fault, and I'm surprised they didn't admit that straight away when you took the car back!! Look, oil has got somewhere nasty, you were working on an oil related part of the car - FIX IT NOW! (thats my attitude anyway)
And a good garage would have taken the car out for a test drive before handing it back to the owner, and this fault should have been spotted and remedied before you went back to collect.Money saving:
Buy a Skoda. Laugh at the VWs who paid several grand more
Its a diesel. 50mpg - laugh at all the petrols
Its a tuned 260bhp diesel - laugh at them in the rearview mirror as they vanish

Someone is telling porkies!! Heat shields on exhausts are just metal shields, no wadding in them. Wadding is in the exhaust itself but there is no where for oil to get in there unless they poured it up the tailpipe!! Is the smoke actually coming out of the exhaust tailpipe or just from around the exhaust in general? If they have just spilt some oil on the exhaust, which is quite likely, then it should just burn off in a couple of miles, aslong as it isn't still leaking onto the exhaust.
The cost of £234 sounds like they want to put a full exhaust on, not just replace the part which might be faulty!!
I'd be tempted to get a second oppinion from another garage or get a friend who knows something about cars to look at it first, then take it back to the original garage with whatever new evidence you have.0 -
it seems blatantly obvious that it is their fault. personally i don't know what you should do. i think i would go down there and tell them what i think had happened, especially if it is a trusted place regularly used.
you could just burn it down.:A
but make sure you find a replacement exhaust first.'What's poignancy grandad?'

yes you need more information as to
1) make and model of car
2) where the oil leak was (eg sump, top gasket etc)
3) exactly what and where this heat shield is.
The garage may claim that it became contaminated by the oil leak before they fixed it
I would be very surprised if this heat shield is an integral part of the exhaustTANSTAAFL !0 -

I don't know much about cars but it didn't make sense to me either about the shiled so I rang kwit-fit and another garage and apparently the type of exhaust it is ..........it does have a wrap-around 'heat-shield/guard' that is welded on and has wadding in it ...................now they say the only way they have got oil into it ,is they have completely botched up the sump job and drained the oil all over this shield................some has then seeped in
does that make sense...................
hubby has been into garage this morning and gone ballistic, general manager then spoke to head mechanic in front of him and gave him a right rollocking for letting the car go out in that state and without road-testing it.
car is being sorted today,(they didn't say how) but hubby has to go and test-drive it at 4.30 and gen manager wants to see him after that to make sure he is satisfied:eek:
I'll let you know how we get on
thank you all for your replies:D0 -

They think we women are stupid but not half as stupid as they must to think that...Those we love don't go away,They walk beside us every day,Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear
Our thoughts are ever with you,Though you have passed away. And those who loved you dearly,
Are thinking of you today.0 -

Are you sure that the oil sump was REALLY leaking and had to be fixed in the first place?
It sounds to me that they can't be trusted at all.0
