How much for a new school uniform?

The amount of uniform you buy depends on the child (how often do their clothes need washing now?) and your laundry routine. I have two girls: one has never spilt anything on her skirt/jumper, the other needed a completely new set of uniform every couple of days in Reception.

To cover both extremes, I would say 3 bottoms, 2-3 jumpers/cardigans and 3-5 shirts, plus PE kit. If they wear a tie, two is a good idea.

If she's starting in September personally I'd leave buying summer dressess till next year. I have a late September birthday and can count on one hand how often it's been nice weather for it and that's twice once one on my 19th birthday, the other 2/3 years ago and I'm in my mid 40s. Frequently September starts off lovely and warm and then changes around mid-month. Dresses bought next summer can be saved till the early days of September next year.

In my experience girls don't get half as stinking in school as boys (although DD is ten and still occasionally comes home plastered in yoghurt after a lunchtime "accident"). DS managed to have lots of polo shirts and sweatshirts handed down to him from DD but he could never hand stuff on because he's destroyed everything! Trousers go shiny from him knee sliding everywhere and sweatshirts are permanently grubby from being used as football goalposts, etc.... :D

Personally I've found DD does get quite a bit of wear out of her summer dresses in September and October, but they tend to be the ones I've bought earlier on in the year so I wouldn't buy one especially for those two months just in case. OP, you also might want to hold off buying too much until your DD shows a preference for trousers or skirts. I know quite afew girls who won't wear skirts or dresses at all, whereas DD doesn't like trousers very much. Also, check whether your DD's school wants them to wear plimsols for PE - ours never did so they just used their normal trainers.

And it looks like we made it once again

When my dd started reception (she's at the end of yr2 now) I was working full time so she needed 5 tops and 5 dresses. I bought her 3 cardigans and 1 sweatshirt. I also buy about 10 pairs of tights because they fall over and get holes in and they shrink in the wash.
Her first set of uniform cost me around £100.

She's going into yr 3 in sept and will be needing new tops shoes cardigans. I've already bought her school bag

5 pairs of trousers and a couple of pinafores £5-6 each
6 polo shirts (bought in packs of 3).. £4 a pack
2 school jumpers and 3 generic supermarket ones £4.50each
PE bag... made from fabric in my stash or recycled.
1 pair of shoes £35ish (Clarks)
1 pair of sandshoes/trainers .. unless they change shoes indoors as a rule then you don't need both. £4.50 for plimsolls, £30ish for trainers
1 pe tshirt, 1 pair shorts.. they only wear them for 2 pe lessons a week so pointless getting more. School sells as a set for £12
30 pairs of identical socks.. easy to pair up, if one gets a hole it has a brother still. M&S 3 for 2 offers.. usually £7/10 a pack of 5 or 7
    1 winter coat .. £35 ish usually
2 of them have the school fleece £4 each.

The book bags at our school are free.. one per year per child.
Water bottles .. we wash and reuse one that contained other drinks and recycle every week or 2.

We got 5 shirts, 5 trous & 3 offical tops, & one load of PE kit as we reckoned one-on-one-off-&-one-in-the-wash might work for tops, but we wanted to try to keep laundry loads down.
As we prep for secondary school for three boys, all with grub location talents, we're getting a clean shirt, trous & top per son per day - just we've accumulated clothes so we can still eat this month.
What blows the school uniform budget are growing feet...
  • A basic uniform set ideally would have a clean top for each day.

    I suggest:

    5 shirts/polo tops
    1 skirt
    1 pinafore
    1 set of trousers
2 packs of black, or white socks (as always get lost)
    5 pairs of winter tights
    2 cardigans
    PE top
    PE shorts
    Plimsolls
    Trainers
    School shoes
    School bag
    Gym bag
    Book bag
    Folding raincoat
    Water bottle
    Pencil case
