Yep, I was offered the choice of 3 points and a £60 fine, or a speed awareness course, at £84! As the 3 points would mean higher insurance premiums for the next 5 years, there really isn't any choice. Just means I won't be able to afford food for a week or so. He had a speed gun, and did say that I would receive the paperwork within 14 days. Also that if I ignored it I would be issued with a court summons. So, what should I do if it doesn't arrive? I'm fairly sure he said something about me being 800 meters away when I was clocked. Do these things work at that distance?

Give it another week then ring them.

If spending £84 means you can't eat for a week, do you really think you can afford to go around getting speeding tickets?

To get clocked at 41 you must have been doing at least (conservatively) 45mph.
Just think, if you'd factored in that extra 5 minutes for the journey you wouldn't be on Supernoodles for the week. Food for thought (literally!)`

Were you given any paperwork at the roadside. Typically this would be a yellow form with a reference number starting with "E"

You should call your local camera partnership and ask them what's going on. If you have that number it will help but they should be able to identify you from your car reg number or postcode.

Bear in mind that there are deadlines both to apply for the speed awareness course and also to take it, so best not to delay.

    Obviously not.

No, I wasn't given any paperwork, only a verbal caution.

As long as the car has a calibrated speedo. The officers opinion is enough to stand up in court.

Nah, if it went that far it'd just get thrown out. They'd need and onboard camera with a speed overlay. Regular panda cars don't have these.

A follow stop is quite common where the offender is caught by an officer gauging the speed from him own speedo.

That is why they have to be calibrated.

ERm, not quite right...my first ever speeding fine occurred because I was followed by a Morris Minor panda car for some distance. No calibration apart from that of the manufacturer...and definitely no cameras, as they hadn't been invented then......but I was a'significant' amount over the limit....and I was 19.....so I wasn't looking as well as I ought to...so..got a Court visit, a fie, and an endorsement.

Taught me more about mirror work than any driving instructor had...!!
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

May have been worth bearing in mind beforehand. We've all been there in similar situations, I got 3 points for checking my phone at the lights. That was a rubbish month!

I got done for speeding last December ... 40 in a 30 zone. It was a parked car with a dash-mounted gun. They pulled me over, invited me to their vehicle for a chat (:)) and then gave me the notification paperwork that I was to present at a convenient office within 30 days.

3 points and £60. They didn't mention or offer a speed awareness course. (Maybe this doesn't apply in Scotland?)

The irony? In April this year that road was reclassified as 40 mph limit. :D
