I would contest it, I once had a landlady try to carge ne for a skip, even when she didnt get one. This money isn't for them to make a profit, and whilst charging a 'fair' amount is ok, landlords need to accet wear and tear on some things. I always contest it, always ask for receipts etc. They might not 'have' to provide it, but certainly is helpful to both sides.0

Unfortunately, we have moved far away. The agent has said the landlord cannot clean now as new tenants have moved in but, thinking out loud, surely he must've had to pay for the clean from his pocket before the new tenants moved in and he's just getting it back from us now?

I think the 'killer question' is how the new tenants' inventory describes the place.
If it states it is 'professionally cleaned' or 'spotless' then the LL doesn't really have much of a leg to stand on, considering they have admitted it wasn't professionally cleaned in-between the OP and the new tenancy.0 -
People need to realise that the deductions ARE NOT to cover the cost incurred in doing things, the LL never needs to spend a penny but can make deductions.
The deductions cover the damage/dilapidation to the LL property; in this case, he can take a reasonable amount to cover the cost of cleaning the house, but doesn’t need to actually get it done, he could do it himself, or just leave it and pocket the money, in effect you would be paying him to give him back a house that is in a worse condition than you got it in.
OP, you’ve admitted that the house wasn’t in the same condition as when you got it due to something you should have done, the cost looks reasonable, you don’t have a leg to stand on, and the LL doesn’t need to provide you with anything, although if you take it to a dispute, justifying £160 will be very very easy (an oven clean is £65 straight away).
