Hi Guys
Hope you can help my mum. Her Pc has got so slow since she upgraded to the new version of Norton Anti Virus. She had to upgrade as she took out the new subscribtion. THere was lots of problems doing online so in the end someone had to come out and install it.
It takes about 2 - 4min to start up and you cannot doing anything until the Norton Logo shows on the task bar.
We have done a full system scan.
She has 256 mb ram and the PC is 4 years old. I have checked for space and she has plenty left.
Please can anyone help
Tina

It may be that the new version uses more RAM more aggressively on start up or it could be a conflict somewhere. Is there anyway you can remove the norton install, delete the install folder, reboot and try installing again?
Also may want to see what is running at start up as it could be 2 or more things fighting for CPU time.

Use the Norton removal tool as well as it can be stubborn to delete everything http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039. You may be better off in the long term biting the bullet and ditching Norton altogether and using a free alternative such as AVG or Avast, they're at least as good as Norton (in my opinion and according to some tests actually better) and you won't have to spend more money. If you're detemined to get paid for antivirus software then get Kaspersky or NOD32. Norton isn't all that good as AV apps go, especially since it can't even do better than the free software."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

The immediate solution is to buy more memory. I'd suggest upgrading to at least 512MB, possibly 768MB or 1GB depending on how the memory already in the PC is arranged and how many free slots there are.
I'd also question the value of Norton, which may be a bit galling after you've spent money on it. I tend to use AVG, and have been happy with it.0 -

Very true, 256 MiB of RAM is very little for an XP machine (assuming it is XP if it's only 4 years old)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I installed Norton internet security 2007 and the same thing happens to my PC it takes 3 to 4 minutes to start up. Upgrading memory wont help as im running with 1gig of ram and it makes no difference. I've dumped Norton on my laptop and now running NOD32 which is a great and will be installing NOD32 on my desk top later today. As for AVG it to can be just as much a pain as Norton at times i've found.Don't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best
Just because it's free don't mean it's good
Ditch Norton Now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall:

Thank you very much for your replies. I agree Norton is a total pain but I have no chance of getting her to change. She is Danish and needs a Danish version which Norton has. To me it looks like Norton takes ages to load. She has SKype which starts up fine then all the other bits but Norton takes ages just to get going. Anyway of changing that or changing the settings. I'd suggest looking into finding a Danish langauge pack or installation for AVG or my personal favourite Avast! It could be a pain searching around the sites, but I'm sure these programs will have a Danish version somewhere.
Good luck with it. But either way I'd say try and change the software before even touching the hardware. One false move and you're paying way too much then you need to for replacements. Even if you have had to purchase software, it doesn't mean it's the best for you!
::EDIT::
I've just checked the Avast website and:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
There is a Danish version in the list, if you scroll down a bit. Hope this helps

Installing Norton products on top of existing Norton products always seems to cause problems.
Best thing to do (apart from ditching Norton) is to uninstall Norton, run the removal tool then reinstall it0 -
Finally managed to get Norton ofF my desk top and installed NOD32 and the whole PC now runs better and faster than when i first bought it five years ago. Norton sucks ditch it NOW!!!!!!Don't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best
