Hi all. Quick question.
We are moving into a new rental on the 24th of June but ending our rental in current property on 30th of June for various reasons.
My question is related to the bills like council tax, water , gas and leccy.
Are there any issues with being in both properties for the week?
I will start all the supplies and c/t properly in the new property on the 24th but will only end the old one on the 30th.
Both come under the same council.

Why pay two lots of Council Tax for the same week?0

This isn't a problem. I've done this every time I moved, you'll get a reduction on the council tax for the property not being lived in and the council may potentially give you a full exemption if you're in an area that has those still.
I've always had good experiences with talking to council tax departments (of the two counties I've lived in) so you might be able to get all the information and exemptions you need just with a short phone call.
Utilities don't need anything special, just make sure to take meter readings on the last day or your tenancy (not the day you move out) and that's it.0 -

Well. If we don't have to we won't but how?
Essentially , the new landlord wouldn't accept us moving in on the 1st and it was a property we'd be unhappy to miss out on for the same of one weeks rent and we gave the old landlord a months notice in writing ie until end of June.
We don't mind paying both as there won't be much utility bills in the new one anyway as we are only planning to move in on the 29th and 30th but we'd be liable for ct frm the 24th and until the 30th in the old property. Are there issues legally with this?0 -
Just claim an exemption or discount on CT for both properties for the periods you won't be living in them. You should find the details on the council website.0

Depending on the council, and the circumstances (eg furnished?) they may be able to apply for a discount/exemption.0 -

you're living in an unfurnished house
I bet that's inconvenient

They won't both be unfurnished at the same time! You tell the CT office that the one you are moving from/or to is unfurnished from x date to y date and vice versa. IF (and only if as rules changed from April) your LA still allows a reduction or even complete exemption for short periods whilst property is empty, you MAY qualify for a discount of a few days on one and a few days on the other, but you need to speak to YOUR council as they are all indpendently responsible for their own CT levies now.
As you have a valid tenancy for both properties at the same time, you ARE responsible for both CT's, and therefore you must apply for any discount you may qualify for, or pay the going rate for both!0 -
We had an overlap between completion on our sale and when we signed up for our tenancy.
It was the same council for both properties which helped. They took the day that we actually moved as the 'changeover' day, even though that was a few days before completion.
We didn't get 'double charged' but it was only a few days and may have been at the discretion of the member of staff.
As to the utilities - they set up a new account for the new property and there was some overlap. But for us that was better than moving everything on one day.It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.
