ASDA 'incident' - would appreciate any thoughts or insight...

Hi there,
I think this is the 1st time I've ever posted, so I'll try to be as concise as possible!
OK, here's the scoop...
I recently bought one of ASDA's own soups, in the clear plastic container, (it was the Piri Piri Chicken soup).
As I was eating it, I felt something sharp as I began to swallow and
what I almost swallowed was a 2" piece of clear, hard plastic, with 2 very sharp points.
This piece of plastic was 'crescent moon' shaped and had obviously come from the rim of the soup container...like it had been 'stamped' out, by mistake, somewhere along the production line or something etc.
To be honest, that was a bit freaky, because I absolutely did not see that piece of plastic in my soup - and to have come so close to swallowing it, it scared me a bit...
The next day, my husband & I took a photo of the piece of plastic and also took a photo of it next to some measuring tape for our records.
I then called the head ofc, who instructed me what to do next, and of course I had to go back to the store where I bought the soup and fill in some paperwork i.e. complaint stuff.
My situation is this:
I have now received the final letter/communication from ASDA's head office and what I've received from ASDA is as follows:
1) an apology
2) a assurance that the supplier is looking into this blah blah
3) as a gesture of goodwill, a £10 gift card. (whooo hooo!)
When I originally spoke with ASDA's head office, I made it clear that it was crucial to find the reason for this as safety was the big concern here...
But...somehow I find myself feeling slightly insulted with their 'goodwill gesture' of £10...
This isn't about money, it wasn't when this first happened and I quite frankly don't understand why I feel the way I do at present...
Anyone have similar experiences, or thoughts about the £10 goodwill gesture??
Am I just being a 'blanket blank' here?
Am I the one with the 'problems'??
You know, it just doesn't seem quite right that this potentially dangerous situation which was ASDA's fault can be glossed over with only £10...
That amount doesn't equate to what could have been quite a bad scene...
Geez - if anyone has any thoughts, I would really, really appreciate them!
Many, many thanks for your time!
Kindest regards,
Kelly

could have been
In any production situation you have these types of risks even with the best practices.
Nothing happened to you. Did it come from the rim of the container of soup you had?
If so then the damage could have happened post production0 -
I'm not sure what you expected. They haven't poo-poo'ed your complaint. They say they are taking it up with the manufacturer, You didnt actually come to any harm And they have made a good will gesture.
Of course it would have cost them more if you had swallowed it and it got stuck in your thoat etc - but then you would have really been harmed, whereas actually you weren't.
They seem to me to have handled the case responsibly.manzanilla0 -
Sounds like the bit that you break off, the tamper proof seal. I reckon it flicked into the bowl and is therefore your own fault."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

How does your expectation for a higher level of compensation equate to your desire for safety ?
If they give you £50 will the product somehow be safer, what about £100 or £1,0000 -
You haven't suffered any loss (except perhaps having gone off and wasted the rest of your soup) so I don't think you should expect any 'compensation'. The £10 is a nice gesture to acknowledge that you brought the issue to their attention and took your time to report it and possibly to compensate for any soup you didn't eat because the incident put you off.
You seem to think the £10 gift card is the end of the matter and they've just issued the card and forgotten about it - I really doubt that is the case. I expect ASDA and/or the supplier will also be investigating how the plastic got into the soup and take action to prevent it from happening again (because the next person could be injured and they know that a £10 gift card won't be good enough if that happens!)Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
Nothing terrible happened, the supplier is looking into it, what else did you expect?
£10 is pretty good going for a non-event, don't you think?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Can only echo what everyone has said really. What more do you want?0

It does sound like the piece of plastic that you take off when opening the soup to me. Thats a crescent shape.0
