Unlimited Texts (Unless you go over 160 characters)

I have been living in the dark ages for some time in regards to mobile phones and have made do with a £5 no frills handset for some time. However a couple of months ago I decided to take the plunge and treat myself to a Samsung Galaxy S4. £37 a month with o2 is probably not the best tariff on the market but I do get unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 2GB data so I don't grumble really. Well I didn't grumble until my £37 increased to £42.30 in my last bill. When seeking help from o2's online chat I was informed that if my text messages exceed 160 characters then it is converted to mms and I am charged accordingly. So basically my unlimited texts really means that I am limited to 160 characters. I was quite frustrated about this and I do think there is a case for breach of contract as these were not the terms which i agreed to. However upon reading further this does seem to be a global issue across a number of networks and apparently it is an issue with most android phones. It is the handsets themselves which convert sms to mms and it is out of the control of the network providers.

I never had this problem with my cheap little £5 handset on a £10 a month rolling contract with unlimited texts. I could write a 10,000 word essay if I wished and send it as a text without additional charges.

Anyway I am where I am and I do like my new handset, I was wondering if any Galaxy S4 users could advise on how to prevent the phone converting texts from sms to mms. It is quite restrictive to write tests within 160 characters having not had limits imposed on my unlimited tariffs before.

In the Android SMS app, press menu, then settings. Untick the box that says 'convert to mms' or something along those lines

Can any S4 users confirm where this setting is? I can't seem to find any options to stop the mms conversion.

A quick Google reveals that you can't stop it without hacking your phone. Either use an alternative app or write several short messages.

I use GOSMS Pro on my S3 and don't have this issue. The only time it tries to convert is if I send to numbers and emails in the same text - In this instance I simply say "no".
I am firmly across the line. I won't impose my values on you if you keep away from mine.
