Dinah, am I right to think that you have a sling for grace? Which one did you get? I need a new one as baby kavics is fast approaching 10 kilos and current one is up to ten kilos only.

Right, October 12th it is. London girlies can come up with some activities for this one I think.

I do, I have quite a few in fact. If you're looking for something structured ie easy to get on I'd recommend the ergo, I have a rose and rebellion and a babyhawk too, but the ergo is definitely the most comfortable, although the babyhawk is good for hip carries and folds up nice and small. The R&R looks pretty but its not as supportive and I find it digs in after being worn for not too long. Plus the ergo has a sunshade for the baby.

If you're after something where she's up and down a lot a ring sling is good, the carriers and wraps require more time to put on. A ring sling takes seconds and is really easy to use, however it's not ideal for long walks as for toddlers you'll use it on the hip and it's not a great way to walk for over half an hour, but they're fab for the supermarket, popping to do errands etc.

If you're looking for a wrap I love my Kokadi although I'd really love a Oscha, they're lovely and soft.

Oh my gosh, how expensive are slings?! I figured a bit of fabric would be a cheap alternative?! :o Also, how the heck do you learn to tie them securely, and how do you stick the baby on your back like the lady in the picture without help? I want a sling, but clearly someone's going to have to show me how to use them... and pay for it! :o

Unfortunately the fabric has to be a specific weave and very well hemmed. If you don't get the right weave the fabric can pull and sag with the baby's weight and potentially could tear. The really scary thing is a lot of slings are more expensive second hand than new as the nice designs are so hard to get hold of. Groups like this are a good way to find a second hand one. A lot of them come with instructions, otherwise there are some good youtube videos out there showing how to do all the different ties. If you aren't bothered about a pretty pattern you can get some cheaper ones, Colimacon are less expensive but plain, or Little Frog have some pretty colours and are a little more. My babyhawk is a really simple mai tai which is easy to tie on as it's a set shape, and you can do front, back and hip carries quite easily, but because the straps aren't thick padded it's not as comfy as a wrap which I could wear all day.

Thanks. The R&r was recommended by someone else too although she said that it kept slipping from her shoulder. Same as the ergo. The problem is that I can't try it on so really need to choose the right one. I am def not a wrap person so they are out.

When I went to London last summer me and my friend just ate our way around. We had breakfast in Covent Garden, nibbled our way around the sweet shops near Buckingham Palace, wound up eating bagels in Brick Lane, had pizza, snogs and cupcakes in Soho, then finished up with an eton mess and Ben's cookies in Carnaby Street. We walked about 20 miles all in! The 12th is good for me :D

    Hope everything's going smoothly, Wendz!
