Cashback Nightmare - Phonebox Direct - please help!

Hi,

I'm with Phonebox direct and have a cashback deal which would save £420 over the year. I photocopied and dated the bills and the forms and posted my 4 and 6 month bills on time as requested. As I had not received any cashback I called today to check.

They said they had not received EITHER of the bills and did I send them recorded delivery. I had not. Apparently this is recommended in the small print in their terms and conditions (but nowhere else!) and it would invalidate all further claims now!!

I'm in the process of writing a letter of complaint but wondered if anyone has had the same experience or have any suggestions about how to make them pay up?

Be warned - use recorded delivery!

Thanks, Ed

  • Sorry to hear about this but it happens every day. It is thought by many people on this forum that some companies will use any excuse they can to get out of paying cashbasck. Some think that bills sent without recorded delivery end up in the round file. If they claim that they never got the bills and you have no proof of delivery, then you have next to no chance of getting your money. You will be angry but it's not worth getting upset, just make sure future bills are sent recorded and you do exactly what the cashback rules say. Some cashbacks are so good that the only way the company survive is by not paying out on every cashback deal.
    Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j
Mortgages make money. Definitely don't wanabee mortgage free!

Take them to the small claims, they have had their comission they can pay you what they owe you.

Sorry to sound harsh, but you MUST send it via recorded delivery as they say thats what you should do in the terms and conditions. Treat it as an expensive mistake. I don't think you'd have any leg to stand on in court because it is clearly stated that missing one claims invalidates the whole thing :(

They make you jump through small hoops, trip up and it bites.

    Try letter of complaint though.

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.
