"It is very expensive" is a very vague statement. What are they comparing it with and for where?

We've stayed in the Algarve where beers were much cheaper than here and eating out perhaps slightly cheaper. I certainly wouldn't call it expensive,

    absolutely.
Portugal is cheap for the med holiday hotspots..the algarve is dearer than Lisbon and Porto is you venture up there for some culture..

On that note, I wouldn't stay too long in the Algarve, as (IMO) there is not that much to do (unless that is why you are going!). Lisbon is stunning and very good value for money, and Porto (Oporto) is VERY good value for money, has a gorgeous river with cafe bars, and stunning bridges, and feels like real, old Portugal.

I found it hard to spend money in Oporto ; and Lisbon too!

The Algarve is good v for money if you know the right places and avoid the tourist traps. When are you looking at going?
  • Their cost of living is lower than ours so on the whole it costs less. Even in the resorts, it is cheaper; they do not exploit their tourists like we do. We go every year and I am always surprised at how cheap it is to eat out and shop. There is a great mall along the coast road called Algarve Shopping and even here you can grab a coffee + doughnut for 1 euro 30 cents! I would highly recommend the Algarve. The local produce is fresh and tastes fantastic and is inexpensive. It costs about £12-15/head to eat out for say 2 courses and drinks.

Hi Felix. As a consequence of me working in the steel-works i have to have the shut down weeks which are the first two weeks in August.I know its probably the most expensive time to go but i have no choice.
The place i have been looking at is a small village called Quateira which is situated between Faro and Albufeira. Thank You

Hi, Stressedoutmother,Just to say thank you for taking the time to reply to my Query. Thank you.
  • Hi, I lived in the Algarve for 3 years 2 years in a small village near Albufeira and 1 year actually in Albufeira. I dont think its a particularly expensive place to stay. Are you thinking of renting a villa? If you are looking to stay somewhere quieter you will need to hire a car as local transport isnt very good. I know of quite a few little places so if you need any help let me know.
