How is it a 'rip off' exactly?

It is always a "rip off" until a claim has to be made :D:D

FWIW, I've never had pet insurance, and I have 5 dogs ( 6 until recently) and averaging over the last 30 years of multi dog ownership, there is no way that pet insurance would have been better for me. Maybe i've been lucky but I've only had one dog that has needed major surgery and two that have needed tablets to treat a long term condition, which wasn't a huge amount anyway.

I somewhat pragmatically take the view that once they get to the latter stages of their lives, I'm unlikely to put them through a serious op anyway and OP, yours are both getting to that stage in my book, though I appreciate that your view may be different.

I'd be tempted to take them off insurance. You may get lucky and not have needed it or if you are unlucky, then maybe you will have saved some up to offset and stick the rest on a 0% card as a previous poster mentioned.

Pet Insurance premiums jump in price when a dog reaches 8 or 10 as they tend to be prone to more claims and more expensive claims as they are in effect more prone to health problems.

    The OP's dogs are 10 and 13

Dogs of that age will not be attractive to a new insurer.

You might be able to get an "accident" policy for a cheaper price but any illnesses would be excluded. Put away any money you can save on the premiums for other vet bills.

    Try the comparison sites.
  • I had a similar experience with the same company with a 12 yr old dog, they said no one would insure her, so I looked into it and found that the Post Office would !! I now pay £11.66 a month and that is a " for life" policy !!
So give it a try and good luck, hope this has helped anyone else with the same issue.:)

If you find "this so tedious", why are you reading this subject and bothering to reply?

To some people their pets are an important part of their lives and their health is equally important - and don't say they must be sad people if that is the case, because they aren't and some need their animal friends to help with their daily lives !!

    Here here, Thomas51, totally agree!
Can I just add, 10 years ago and more when those of us with now old animals took out insurance, the industry was a very different place to what it is now. What are those of us with old animals supposed to do now costs have soared and we're being ripped off? - just have our pets put to sleep! And, by the way, if it was a choice of having to get rid of my pets or my car.....the car would go every time!

This is so tedious. If you can't afford an expensive pet then don't have one. It's not a human right. It's not even a virtual necessity like having a car and buying insurance. It's a fashion and life-style option.

Running a car is a lifestyle choice.
