    Cancel those DDs now!!!

It's silly to incur two lots of fees (one from the bank and another from the originator).

You may have a case for refunding the fees charged if you can't pay priority debts, such as mortgage/rent and Council Tax for example. Do as stclair suggests and contact them. However, if you're claiming 'hardship' I hope there are no 'frivolous' debit card transactions on the account when they go through it thoroughly.

What conversations you had with them you will need to provide more details if you require any assistance from anyone :D

I would call NatWest Lending tomorrow on 023 8022 6442 press option 2 then option 3 and discuss your options with an advisor. (I might even answer the call myself) lol

It might also be worth registering for Act Now Alerts if you haven't already to prevent the same circumstances happening again in future:

Firstly you should cancel the Direct Debits then the companies can not attempt to claim them from your account because you have no funds to pay them.

Just speak to lending and they will come to some arrangement with you to put your account back into order. If your having funds paid into the account it might be worth redirecting them somewhere else if its going to cause you financial difficulty.

So stop doing the things that generate the charges.

Great bit of help that! Maybe the bank should act likewise, it is a two way relationship, well it certainly should be!!!

The only reason the OP is having issues is because the bank keep taking the bl**dy money in the first place!!! They should start acting responsibly, they know they are fleecing the customer, running up huge charges each month, they should be offering to help but pure GREED means that is the last thing on their mind!

Maybe a temporary extension of the overdraft by the monthly charges or something similar...after all they have had that and more by the sounds of it!!!

I thought so too. After all, like I said earlier, if there were no DDs then there would be no charges. It really is as simple as that isn't it?...because in times of trouble you deal in cash - that way you know where you are.

Er no. In the "first place" the OP took, or attempted to take, money that wasn't his to take. In effect, having read the account T&Cs - and in particular the fees and charges section - he decided to ask for an informal overdraft facility (by not cancelling DD payments that were due to leave his account).
Maybe a temporary extension of the overdraft
Unlikely to be granted, being as there have been no/little credits to the account since last year when he became unemployed.

Hang on a minute- if OP is claiming benefits I think there's some rule that says they aren't allowed to take them to service bank charges- I got three months worth of OH's DLA back from Santander when I pointed this out to them.
