hi
i am off on holiday next week and my friend wishes to borrow my car for the time that i am away.( just over a week)
initally it didnt seem a problem however the more i have thought about it the more it seems like its not a good idea.
can any one tell me the following.
what sort of insurance does my friend need to be able to drive my car?
do i have to tell my insurance company that i am away for a week out of the country.
my car is on hp do i need to let them know that my friend will be driving my car.
they all seen quite simple questions yet i am stressing about stuff like what if my friend has an accecident or what if my car is stolen when i am away.
can any one please advise.

Depends what there policy covers for....
Some policies will cover the polciyholder to drive a 3rd party car, but only on a 3rd party basis, a few will do it comprehensively, and some wont cover either...
personally, id dircet you friend to a car rental.Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?0 -
As above if they have a car and fully comp insurance they " might " be covered to drive your car, But its 3rd party only.
If they have an accident thats their fault you get nothing. If its stolen under their care you may have issues with your insurance covering it.
Not all policies cover driving other cars also. Could be costly if they were not insured and got stopped, Car impounded with £20 odd a day storage adding up until you return and find its not there.
How much do you trust them? Whats the car worth?
You can easily lose friends over something like this.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
the car is worth quite a bit. its a 62 plate.
i do trust them but i am sure they dont have the money to pay for the car if they wrote it off.
trouble is i did tell them they could borrow it.
i feel a bit of a !!!! now.
dont know what to say to them now.credit card bill. £0.00
overdraft £0.00

Do they have insurance just now? whats up with their car?
ask for their insurance docs, and if it says they are covered for 3rd party only, use that as the reason why you wont lend the car.Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?0 -
Add them to your insurance.0

i dont really want to have to pay for my friend to borrow my car.
they havent got a car at the moment but apparently they are a named driver on someone elses policy. so they said they would be covered..
dont know if this is true.
i just wish i kept my mouth shut and hadnt told them i would be away and my car would be free that week.credit card bill. £0.00
overdraft £0.00

very few (if any) insurers provide DOC cover for named drivers and if they did it would only be third party.
As above, the only realistic way is to add them to your insurance0 -
Probably not true. Ask then for proof if you are going ahead.paulwellerfan wrote: »they havent got a car at the moment but apparently they are a named driver on someone elses policy. so they said they would be covered..
The only way I would do it would be with them added to my insurance and them paying the cost. Also, get a deposit from them equal to your excess in case they do have a claim.0
