Plusnet

Hi

Im thinking of changing from orange boradband as im paying £17.99 a month at the moment. I am going to ring orange up and try and get a better deal but if they dont offer me one, i want to be able to ask for my MAC code. Therefore, has anyone used plusnet braodband as they doing broadband for £9.99 a month at the moment.
Thanks

Yes, I use Force9 which is there sister company.

Been with them for around 3 years now and no real problems. There email system isn't that reliable, but if you use a different free email addres (e.g. Gmail) it isn't a problem.

    I'm on there 8GB for £14.99 a month version.

  • I just recently left Plusnet after 2 years with them. They're ok for web surfing and e-mailing but they throttle speeds quite heavily so if you need good speeds (for downloads, streaming and the like) there are a lot better ISPs out there (Entanet resellers, IDNet, Zen, Be...).
The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.

I left PlusNet after about 3-4 years of quite good service, my 'up to 8mB' service (usually 2mB) was often down in the 100s of Ks and at time it was down to 56K.

I moved to Zen, it costs more but I have a constant reliable service.

PS: PlusNet were very quick when I asked for a MAC !

i have had plus-net for 18 months with no problems, however, they recently had a security breach which gave most or all customers email addresses to god knows who and now i have 100s or spam a day. they have been very good keeping me up to date with the problem but i am not amused.

The £9.99 option only has 1GB month of included bandwidth. Once you hit the 1GB, you either get throttled to 128K access speeds for the rest of the month; or you can pay £1 for an extra GB. They do have other options which give you a larger monthly allowance and faster access speeds put they cost more. The £9.99 option is really aimed at very basic web surfing and email in not very large amounts (kind of a faster dial up service). Apart from that, PlusNet are OK although customer service can be patchy and they play hard and fast with their T&Cs so read up on them (and associated documents) before you sign up.

    hi,

im thinking of signing up with plus net

ive got a 2 year old bt modem and some splitters etc

do i need the 1 port router that they are offering or is my equipment good enough?

also was looking at the ebuyer offer of the £29.99 wireless router, is this something that i could use instead?

    thanks

Your BT modem & splitters should work fine. If you are going to stay with Plusnet for more than 12 months, why not get the free hardware anyway in case the BT stuff stops working. Note if you leave Plusnet before the year is up, the hardware isn't free.

You would only need a wireless router if you need to do wireless networking within your house.

    thanks for that,

with the wireless thing, my pc is a long way from my phone point - and the last time i tried bb i could only get it to work on my laptop which was almost plugged directly into the phone point.

as i say this was 2 years ago - is there a better solution now or is the wireless method the best way to go?

check out the plusnet and adslguide forums before you choose. Plusnet became one of my least favourite ISP about 8 months ago, since I left they have recently had there email hacked, which has caused my no end of spam mail (was < 10 per month now over 20 per day). I have my own domain and the actual full address being spammed is the one I ONLY used for plusnet.

You could have a look at 'homeplug' devices.
