And there's my next question - who uses a top sheet with their duvet? I don't - that's the whole point of a duvet so you don't have layers, isn't it?0 -
I just buy a new one each year but don't tell OH, I tried washing it in the bath and it just went a bit odd and had thin and fat bits - but really noticeable and it was a proper nightmare getting it from the bathroom to the line.0

We have a 'autumn' and a 'summer' which can clip together for winter/ if the heating breaks down. I air whichever one I'm about to put away but have come to the realisation that the autumn one which we're still using atm is looking gurt grotty. I'd resolved to take it to the launderette before it goes away but now I'm wondering whether to just treadle it in the bath! I may try it with the summer one if it ever makes it to the bed this year.....They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.

I was mine about every 3 months. Ours are feather and fit in the washing machine just fine, I leave them on the banisters for the day or the line if the weather is good and finish them off in the tumble dryer to fluff them up nicely.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

I must confess to being a bit anal about making sure that the duvet is in the same configuration every time I change the bed. Do you know what I mean? I have actually written T/R on the top right corner of my duvet to ensure it goes on the same way all the time. I just can't bear the thought that either my hubby's side will be on my side or that the 'feet' end will be at the 'face' end. Same with pillows - I can't let anyone else change the bedding in case they don't put things back to their original positions.
Me too. I use the label as a marker. And pillows, I always make sure mine are on my side. On the odd occasion I find he's snaffled one of mine, I whip it out from under his head before he has a chance to 'sweaty head' it. Yuk!I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
Mine are duck down and I didn't realise they could be washed.
Briefly, I change the covers regularly and put them on the line in the summer once or twice for an air.
What do you do with pillows (they're like small duvets aren't they?).0 -
I'm another one who replaces it rather than try to wwash it .I used to bung it in the bath and let my youngest DGS jump about on it with his sock off but now I have a different bathroom (no bath just a large walk-in shower) I just replace and give the old one to Dd for her dogs bedShe has a cross shepard and a mini jack Russell and they snuggle down together at night .As a new one won't break the bank its cheaper to replace rather than have cleaned as locally its about £17.00 to be cleaned and I can buy a new one for a lot less
Pillows I also replace as its just not worth trying to wash them and I do like new pillows every year0 -

I always use a top sheet and find it strange not to. I was brought up with sheets and blankets and when we started using duvets (or continental quilts) exchanged the blankets for the duvet. If it ever gets really hot, :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:then I can sleep with just the sheet.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Continental quilt - I forgot that's what we used to call them!
My MIL still uses old fashioned brushed cotton sheets and a huge heavy purple felted-wool blanket with the 2" wide satin edge! Quaint.0 -
We all have a 13.5 king sized duvet (3 beds) for winter/spring/autumn and they go out on the line every couple of months for a good beat and air off. I steam clean them once a year and replace one every year (so a 3 year cycle). Pillows get the same treatment (steam cleaning and line airing) and I replace them every 18/24 months when they get to flat to fluff.
In the summer we just have a sheet and blanket or just the sheet, the duvets get a really good airing then and packed in a vacuum sealed bag to stay fresh.
Duvet covers/sheets and pillow cases get changed every 4/5 days on our bed (DH is disabled and spends a lot of time in bed so it needs doing). DDs beds get done once a fortnight. Mattresses and or toppers get flipped/turned at the same time to make sure they wear evenly."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0
