Cancelling BT

I will be moving house very soon and need to cancel my BT subscription. Can anyone please advise on how to do so and tell me how long it takes before they stop charging.

Phone them on 0800 800150 (free call). They will suspend the line and stop charging on the date you specify, even if it's tomorrow (or possibly even today). I did this recently and it was very simple.

    Details here:

    Hi,

When you close a line with BT you are required to give 14 days notice. If you give less than this, the line can still stop on the day you ask, but you will be charged for 14 days rental from the date of your request to stop the line. HTH

My guess is that Louise is technically correct (i.e. it's probably in their terms and conditions) but they probably don't enforce this as I'm sure I gave them less than 14 days notice and they stopped charging line rental on the specified date.

Just out of curiosity, perhaps you could let us know when you have contacted them. Do they enforce the 14 days or will they cancel within a couple of days?

No, BT DO enforce it, you may have cancelled back when it was only a 7 day cancellation period.

OK, I won't argue with an expert! I must have remembered wrong - maybe I did give 14 days notice.

    This is enforced.

You should be fine, just give a 14 day warning period. Your line was switched on before the enforced 12 month period.

It depends if it was a brand new line, if so you would have had a 12 month contract so there would be an £18 cancellation charge, otherwise it will just be line rental up to the day you close the line or for 14 days from the date you place your stop order if you dont provide 14 days notice. HTH

hi louise if i gather correctly...

the line was already there i just activated it and pay line rental. Iif i cancel do i still have to pay for the remaining months (i activated the line in Jan)

If you activated it in Jan free of charge then you woudl have had a 3 month contract so no cancellation fee as 3 months has passed. You will just have the 14 days line rental if you dont give at least 14 days notice of your cancellation. HTH
