Is there any point signing on yet? (sanctions related)

So the situation I've found myself in is this. I'm leaving my job in a week's time. I'm pretty certain I would be classed as voluntarily unemployed, and get no JSA for 13 weeks. The money I have in the bank will last me roughly that length of time anyway.

My question is this. If 13 weeks passes and I still haven't found another job, would I at that point get JSA straight away, with 13 weeks already having passed since I left my job? Or would I be sanctioned straight away for a further 13 weeks?

I'd sign on straight away if I were you. They will decide the length of sanction for voluntarilily leaving you job.
You have to be unemployed for 26 weeks, only then will they not contact your previous employer.
Contribution based JSA allowance will be paid for 26 weeks but depends on your NI contributions in the relevant years.

What I don't want to do is get a sanction against my name uneccesarily. Does anyone know what would happen if I signed on in 13 weeks time? Would I have to serve a further 13 weeks before I qualified for JSA?

no-one can say how long a sanction you would be given...it can be UP TO 26 weeks. The only way to avoid a sanction would be to wait 26 before signing on

AFAIK, the sanction isn't from the date you leave, its from the date you claim. So if you wait 13 weeks then claim, you could end up sanctioned for a further 13 weeks. This is what I understood, but could be wrong.
Even so, sign on anyway as they may not sanction you for so long; or at all if you're really lucky.

Why do you think you will be classed as voluntarily unemployed?

Have you just decided to leave or is it a voluntary redundancy situation.

From reading this site I would say, sign on staight away, the sanction applies from date of claim not from date of leaving job.

If a person is sanctioned does that mean the NI contributions aren't paid as well?
    It's someone else's fault.

That is not true, the length of the sanction is taken from the day after they left the job in question.

AFAIK if you are taking voluntary redundancy then you won't be sanctioned.

That is obviously better news if that is correct.

Does anyone know for sure either way?
