OK, have just tried it again and still the same. Yes the steering lock does release when I press the button. When the button is pressed there is some sort of quiet whiring noise trying to do something but no action from the starter motor itself. Also tried to see the starter motor but there is so little room to be able to view anything under the bonnet. I'm wondering if it may be a fuse. Either one in with the battery or the ones adjacent to the battery but I'm reluctant to fiddle with it as there is such a high current involved.

Hi mate on the clutch/brake pedals there are the sensor units, they can break away and leave you with this fault, but odd both would have done this so check the brake one first.

Failing that have a good look through the fuses and make sure nothings broken, there will be spare replacements on the right hand side, panel is in the passenger side where your bonnet release is and engine bay by battery.

Most cars have a permanent live direct from the battery connected to the starter motor at ALL times. This is the thick HT lead and will short out if it touches the bodywork or engine if you undo it whiltz still hooked up to the battery.

Thanks for your help guys. I can't even see the starter motor so will not be attempting to reconnect anything. I had to mess about with the electric window fuse in the car a few weeks ago so I think they are ok but those fuses don;t seem to be relevent to this problem. More like the fuses under the bonnet or with the battery as some there control the starter motor. Have also tried starting with either the clutch or the brake. Doesn't work with either.
Not been on Renault forum but was on another forum and they were saying stuff like water in the fusebox etc. Have now emailed 3 local mobile mechanics to see if they think they can fix it...

do you have 2 key cards have you tried both? have you got under the steering wheel and looked at the back of the pedals up hi to see if the connections have come loose or away?

the clutch pedal sensor is a likely suspect to being broken as its low down a foot can kick the connectors off. but the back up start brake sensor is higher up, i would check this one first then onto the next-

on the battery is a red box that had larg flat blade fuses, some you can see if they are broken some are sealed to test them with a multimeter.

also make sure the car isnt in gear as it wont start with it in gear without clutch depression.

if it was a card error or card reader error the display will tell you.

a flat battery will also give off duff noises and prevent start up.

Thanks for suggestions. I will check the pedals properly. I have tried both key cards. i have had the car for over a year so know what is normal etc.

Have just looked at the pedals and the clutch sensor connector is still attached. However, this may have already been faulty as I always use the brake pedal when starting. Tried to view the brake pedal connector but could not see it at all. I realise it is higher up than the clutch one but just could not see it plus it is awkward to get your head in a position to view it.

It may be in the same silly position as the old one, that was virtually impossible to see as well.

The connector I was talking about pulling off and pushing back on again on my old car was not a thick HT lead. I think it was a low voltage signal lead that told the starter motor when to start.

The first time I had the fault I phoned my breakdown recovery company, and the mechanic who came out showed me what he'd done to fix the problem. I then just knew how to find the connector by touch alone, to be able to pull it off, sometimes clean it, and push it back on.

Not saying I think this is the problem in this case, just explaining what I posted yesterday rather better!
