Smoking Whilst Pregnant!

Not a defence for those women in the slightest.. I hate seeing pregnant women smoke.
After an laparoscopy a couple of years back, I had some issues that meant I had to stay in hospital for a week after.
For the laparoscopy, they have to inflate your abdomen with gas to get a better view of your internals. Afterwards I looked about six months pregnant.
I was told (even encouraged) to go out for a cigarette to calm down, so was rolled out in a wheelchair with a drip and various tubes coming out of me.
I got the impression that many people must have thought I was pregnant due to the dirty looks I was getting.
I ended up making a sign that said "I'm not pregnant, so **** off".
The looks stopped.
:starmod:you're awesome.. act like it:starmod:0 -

To be fair though, if she smokes after pregnancy, baby is still exposed to fumes in house so there are risks of passive smoking not just within pregnancy.0

Thankfully we still live in a society where laws are applied equally not selectively.
If something is wrong, it is wrong for everyone... E.g crack cocaine is bad and therefore illegal for everyone .. Not selective parts of society.
Therefore if smoking is wrong then make it illegal for everyone not make it ok for some but not others.
The comments singling out one group for a characteristic put me in mind of the kkk or nazi Germany.. Where some citizens are more equal then others like when only some of society could vote.
You cannot condone treating different people differently ... if its bad for one then it's bad for all.
So make it illegal or accept that adults can do what is legal without some do gooder critising them.0 -

Drinking is legal for adults, illegal for babies, so why is an adult allowe to drink when pregnant?
Unfortunately, just because something is legal, doesn't make it right. Child abuse is illegal unless, apparently, said child is still growing, in which case it's perfectly ok.
As I said, if I allowed/forced my newborn baby to drink alcohol and smoke, I would have my children taken away and probably be prosecuted for child abuse. However doing it before they're born whilst they're infinitely more susceptible to the toxins and can have lifelong damage caused by them, it's ok? No.0 -

If you feel so strongly then why not lobby your mp to make smoking illegal ? Instead of critising legal behaviour.
As to comparing drinking etc.. Being illegal for children but not adults.. Lots of things are illegal for young children driving, voting , being left alone etc.. As you become an adult you obtain rights and responsibilities .. The right to make legal choices without someone critising you and telling you it's wrong, the responsibility to obey laws and participate in society within the law.
We live in a democracy therefore it is not acceptable to lambast perfectly legal behaviour. If you feel strongly about an issue use the democratic framework.
Btw I actually agree with you re smoking for anyone ( including those pregnant but not limited to)but I would never critise someone for legal behaviour .. While its legal it's their choice and not for me to judge. Therefore while I believe all smoking should be made illegal. While its legal I will keep quiet and not abuse and bully anyone for behaving legally.
And if someone pregnant or otherwise lights up that is their legal choice. To criticize an adult for their legal choice due to a characteric ( in this case pergnancy) may well fall foul of anti discrimination legislation. It would be interesting to see a test case. However that aside if you victimize a segment of society and treat them differently where will it stop.
The foundation of the law is that it treats people equally if something like murder is illegal for one it is illegal for all.0 -

Unfortunately, legal behaviour or not, what they do can be extremely damaging to their unborn child and, particularly in the case of smoking, their born child.
Whether you agree with it or not, I fully reserve the right to criticise someone based on the fact that, despite it being legal, they are potentially killing or severely disabling a child.
Also unfortunately, too many people are in favour of things such as drinking and smoking (the government particularly as they're such a good form of income through the heavy taxation) for there to ever beamy realistic chance of them being made illegal.
Alas, my judgement comes not only from the legality of an action, but also from a moral standpoint as to the effect an action will have on others. In this case, it can have serious consequences including the death of an unborn child.
Plain and simple, legal or illegal, it's p!ss poor parenting and selfishness, and if you're putting something such as alcohol or tobacco before your own child, you're messed up and don't deserve to be a mother.
I do not smoke, never have, but my husband does, and the day I found out I was pregnant was the day my husband was no longer allowed to smoke in the house. He now has to go through the PITA rigmarole of going outside in all weathers, coming in afterwards, washing his hands, brushing his teeth and changing his clothes before he can come back into the living room or around the kids. He doesn't mind as he knows it's what's best for them.
When I was pregnant I also stopped drinking full stop, having only a sip of my husband's glass of champagne at my own wedding. Again, it just seemed pointless to risk my child's life for something so non-essential. It didn't even seem like a choice, it just seemed natural.0 -

It is illegal To critise or bann something based on a feature .e.g you can't critise someone for their colour or sexualit
Therefore I would dispute your right to critisise someone's right to legal behaviour due to where they are pregnant, their colour, education, sexuality, marital status.
What's next different races can't go to the same schools .. Signs forbidding people form living according to their own legal viewpoint.
So if smoking is wrong it's wrong for everyone and should be illegal for everyone or legal for everyone.
You cannot pick on segments of society and discriminate against them.
If the thread was smoking for anyone is disgusting and wrong I would agree .. The issue I have is picking one segment of society and engaging in discriminatory behaviour.0 -
You need to get off your high horse and get real! Are you seriously pertaining to be on the highest of moral grounds? Mama moos points are excellent and her morals towards an unborn baby far outweigh your crappy argument. She is not discriminating, you are taking her comments to the 'enth' degree purely for an argument.

I actually as I have said agree that smoking is bad and there are no arguments or benefits for smoking for anyone.
But why single out one section of society and demonise then ..
If I became I wiould do what is best for my child.. All the correct nutrients And avoidance of anything that could harm my child.
But I do not want my choices to be taken away from me and for people to feel that I am not a full citizen with the same rights as everyone else or that somehow my choices are for them to critisise ..
Do pregnant people become second class citizens without the right to make their own choices within the law.
And by restricting freedoms that is what is wrong .. What's next lock pregnant people up and take away all their rights ..0
