Smoking Whilst Pregnant!

In the past week I have seen so many pregnant women outside at the hospital continue to smoke cigarette's, along with there companions. One of expectant mothers was even chain smoking!
This really does my head in when I see women smoking whilst they are pregnant. If they want to continue to puff away on highly toxic carcinogenic dried plant material - then fine but don't do it whilst you are carrying your unborn child who has no choice but to share your poison!
In this day with all the safety warnings surely people should no better. I don't care about the right to smoke, when you are carrying a baby then the unborn child's welfare is paramount. It's just a shame that some selfish people are putting there baby at risk, not to mention that there is a risk that the child could be born with a nicotine addiction - but who cares as long as 'she' can have her fix
(That feels better now its off my chest)

I agree. I think it's bad enough when woman who are having a normal pregnancy still smoke but to do it when you are in hospital cos you or your baby need medical attention is just awfulHave a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0

A 'lady' walked past my house earlier smoking, heavily pregnant and with a baby in a pram facing her. Had to stop myself from saying something, she looked like the sort that would happily use her fists even in her current state.
Sadly her children will grow up thinking that is the norm :-(0 -
I agree, I've seen more and more pregnant woman do this in public. Its of my hates too, along with mothers pushing a buggy with a fag in their hand.
I was a 20 a day smoker when I found out I was expecting (not planned but a welcome surprise!) From the moment moment I had an idea I was expecting I stopped, no cutting down or the odd 1 or 2 here. To continue is utterly selfish and irresponsible.2013 wins: Persil Bunny0 -
On the plus side, I've noticed a lot of adults who have children will stand outside their own houses (in all weathers) to smoke.
I've also had friends who insist on going outside to smoke even though we've told them they are quite welcome to smoke indoors. (Obviously no children present.)There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
As much as I agree with all that's been said, and think its wrong etc, not fair on the baby etc, at the end of the day it's their choice to continue to smoke whilst pregnant....a highly selfish one I agree, but still their choice, and anyone who interferes and tells them so, deserves to get a mouthful or whatever back, because it's non of their business. Harsh maybe, but true.
A lass who I used to work with years ago smoked through both her pregnancies, and when I used to stand there talking with her, I didn't like her doing it, and she knew herself it was wrong, but, like I said, it was her business, nobody else's.0 -

But its not just 'her business' is it? when does the baby get any rights or can someone do whatever they like to it until its born?
I could argue I can beat my kids raw with a cane and its 'my business' no one should interfere because they are my kids and I can do what I like to them.0 -
This reminds me of the great photo I saw from a newspaper once, showing a very concerned woman troubled by the effect that the noise of pneumatic drills ("jackhammers") might be having on her baby.
Oh, the irony...

That is simply wrong. It's also the unborn child's business. Unfortunately the unborn child needs to rely on other people to speak up for it.It's someone else's fault.0 -
When I was in labour with my second son, I went outside to get some fresh air as my delivery room was quite stuffy. Unfortunately, there was no chance of fresh air, as outside was just full of pregnant women smoking.
There was also a woman there having a cigarette who was also in labour, who I saw the following day telling another woman that she was upset as newborn child was seriously ill in the neonatal unit with lung problems.
I honestly think that if you smoke during your pregnancy, your baby should subsequently be removed from you, or at least placed under local authority monitoring. If you're willing to put your child at such risk before they're even born, what sort if mother are you? And how can you be trusted to raise them if you can't even look after them in utero?
It's child abuse, plain and simple.
If I forced my kids to smoke 10 a day they'd be whipped away from me in no time at all, why is it any different if they're still inside the mother?0
