I,m not up on xp,but put the disc in the drive, restart the pc and set up should run(may have to change the boot order in bios).

Windows 8 is fine,I installed classic shell, made a few tweaks and now only see the metro screen when I want to,there is a lot of help for windows 8 on the net.

the pc may have a factory restore partition, which would be the easy way to fix it. post a hjackthis log to compare with the other user with the same problem.

    XP. Coincidence?

I haven't had the time to look further but this previously uncommon BSoD seems to be cropping up an awful lot over the last few days.... Systems running XP seem to be the common denominator....

What price a dodgy update - be it windows or other?

dodgy update to something, the question is what?? I've not had any MS update notifications over the last week, so I doubt it is a windows update, more likely a.n.other prog which is borking something in XP... another good reason not to have automatic updates set to automatic on anything, do them all manually and at least there's a chance of a speedy ID of the culprit ;)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

My parents had exactly this problem on Thursday too. It's quite a coincidence if there isn't some common denominator.

I'm an IT techy. I fixed one of these yesterday for a customer on XP, with the same BSOD message along with a slightly different message. May not be the same but do you have the RAPPORT software installed? If so, uninstall it while in Safe Mode.

If you must have it, re-install a more up-to-date one. System Restore, chkdisk, etc didn't work. Turns out it was Rapport. I used whocrashed to find this out. Antivirus and drivers may also be causing it and whocrashed can tell you what.

Yes I do have Rapport software. I will try what you suggest and then should I system restore to a week or so ago when the machine was working ok?

Also I noticed that Malwarebytes did not work properly after my first system restore. It gave me a message saying "this version is corrupted, download a new one" then when I tried I got the blue screen again.

Is Whocrashed available on the net and if so have you a link?

    Thanks for the suggestions.

The one I previously linked to had Rapport installed too. Starting to look a likely candidate.

    Spooky

Thursday at about 7.10pm the world stopped on my PC. I had the machine in a computer repair shop on Friday AM and they gave it me back Friday afternoon saying we would have to reinstall windows and its not cost effective - have a new machine.

I am now working from my laptop.

The worrying thing is that my laptop has Windows xp and has Repport and Malwarebytes installed.

I am waiting for the blue screen AAARRRRRGGGGHH

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

PS I have not yet tried Re:Installing Windows, but will as a last resort.
