PC Stopped working - Any Advice appreciated

Options
Hi All,

My desktop PC is 10 years old and is running XP home edition. Up until Thursday it was running fine.

I got the blue screen all of a sudden with the message at the top

INVALID_PROCESS_ATTACH_ATTEMPT

I have rebooted in safe mode and system restored to a previous date, and this does not solve the problem. I have done this three times and I still get the same message.

Is my computer at the end of its life or is there anything else I can try?

I am reluctant to spend on a new computer but fear I may have to.

If you can do a backup then do a full system restore

Click on the download link, install instructions are on the next page, not sure if it will work in safe mode but I would give it a try.
Do you have any windows instillation discs if the download doesnt work?

I got as far as downloading and clicking on the link and I get the message that I do not need this download as I am on Service Pack 3 and not Service Pack 2.

I have all the discs that came with the computer. I have a disc that says Windows XP Home edition includes service pack 1a in an envelope that contains a product key code.

    Would that be it?

Yes, but doing this will result in a clean install and wipe all your data, unless you have already backed up.
You'll then have to do several hours downoading to get back up to date with SP3.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

If you back up ,you can then do a clean install ,but as the previous poster says it will take time to get back up to date, but if the PC isnt working you might as well give it a go.

Data is not a problem. I back everything that is important to me on a seperate memory stick and I have two copies of that stick.

I am resigned to the fact that I will have to get a new PC. The one I use at work is windows 7, but do you guys think I should have windows 8. Is there much difference in the layout and operation?

I might as well give it a go to do a clean new install. I am posting this on my laptop, so I can keep in touch with you guys whilst trying to do this. I will have a go then and ask if you kind guys would be prepared to help me with this. I would appreciate it.

So presumably step 1 - insert windows xp home edition CD. Is this right and should I do this in safe mode?
