I have an iPhone 5 and while it's the best camera phone I've used, I would rate it only as "OK" but not great. I am comparing it with a Canon G11 and a Canon digital SLR, which are dedicated cameras of course.

The iPhone 5 has an annoying problem of saving inverted images (and video by all accounts) which isn't a problem for an Apple computer but can be for one using Windows...

I love the phone, but it's probably not the best camera around...

Galaxy S3 (S4 now?) has a great camera considering it's a mobile phone. OH has one and uses it all the time for photographs, hasn't tried video though.

Is the camera a true priority over other features?
There is the Nokia 808 Pureview for megapixel nutters
...but the Galaxy S4 shows what is possible today
Here's a very detailed comparison inc sample images of a group of high end camera phones:

I love my iPhone but there are much better camera phones out there. The S3 being one.

Not in my personal experience of both, picture quality on the S3 was pretty mediocre to say the least, with lower definition and resolution and higher noise than the iPhone.

For the best pictures at night you want the Lumia 920 or the new 925, during the day I would say the Nokia 808 or the Samsung Galaxy S4.

As a matter of interest, have you owned and actually tested the camera ability of all the phones you are recommending? Or just going with the hype of what the reviews and press releases say?

I have used both the Lumia 920 (current phone) and the 808 (briefly). My flatmates have both an iPhone 5 and GS4 so I have seen the pics both can take. The only one I haven't used is the 925 but that incorporates the tech used in the 920 so I thought it was fair to include it. Do you have any major disagreements with the handsets I have included?
