Things to do / places to eat in Ilfracombe?

We have a week booked in Ilfracombe at the end of July. Having never been before can anyone recommend any reasonable places to visit / places to eat locally? It is for 2 adults and 2 girls aged 13 and 9. Have been working on paying off cc so a hoping the week will not be too expensive! :o

If the weather is nice enough, buy a disposable BBQ and spend the evening on the beach cooking hotdogs & hamburgers!! It's one of my favourite things to do in one of my favourite places. The beaches are stunning around there.

That's a lovely idea, assume its ok to do this on the beaches there? Have been some places where this is not allowed.

First place I'd go to is anywhere but Ilfracombe ;)

Na I jest, it has gotten a lot better over the last couple of years. There's an amazing Ice cream place that sell blue bubblegum Ice cream :D It's on the road to the Verity statue.

There's Barnstaple about 20 mins away which is our local town. That has places like Prezzo/pizza express/dominoes etc. One chinese I'd reccommend it Fulhams Chinese. It's Gorgeous. hmmm, thinking about it now, might get OH to go get me some tonight as he owes me a chinese ;)

Be there last week in the month - attractions we have in mind -
    - Sea Aquarium, and the 'Tunnels'.

Look around Barnstaple & Bideford - which one has the Steam Railway? How long is the line?
Might go down south to Bude & up north to Lynmouth.

Not sure either of them have a steam railway as such - there is a bit of a railway at Bideford but its not really a running operation. http://www.bidefordrailway.co.uk/

You might be thinking of the Lynton and Barnstaple line rebuild which is at Parracombe - http://www.lynton-rail.co.uk/ Barnstaple still has a live Network Rail connection.

Croyde Bay is a nice pretty natural beach if you fancy a different day out - we had a week there a couple of years ago and didn't really do much apart from spend the days on the beach - there is a stream running down the beach (clean fresh water stream) which attracted legions of dam builders each day, plus the dunes and for the older ones its a good surfing or body boarding beach with full RNLI lifeguard cover.
