moving home - sky accounts

Hi

We're moving shortly (Yay) and not sure if it will be beneficial to cancel the sky where we are and then be a new customer in partners name to get new customer deals or just move the existing contract across.

We'll probably need a new dish as I don't think the one thats up has sky plus connections - would that make a difference?

You need to first confirm that your contract has ended and that you are free to cancel. Sky is sneaky about this as anytime you add a service you need to read the fine print. We ordered a wireless hub to connect the Sky Box to the internet for On Demand and subsequently discovered that has added another 12 months to our contract.

If you cancel and switch, you just need to be OK with not having service in the interim before the engineer comes out. If you have more than TV with them that could mean internet and phone as well. We cancelled Sky phone/broadband during a home move and it was 4 weeks before the new provider set us up.

When we moved Sky sorted it very efficiently including installing a new dish at the new property even though it already had an (old) one. No charge for this.

If you watch Sky then clearly your contract hasn't 'ended' - I will only end when you advise termination and give them 30 days notice.

But how can they tie you in for another 12 months without informing you - without your knowledge or agreement?

we had similar situation last year. All they offered was a "free move". In old house sky was in my name. We cancelled and got sky at new home under OH's name. Got some introductory offer (including free isntallation) and £80 from quidco.
