I have just left Admiral and it does say in the policy they will auto-renew unless you contact them in advance and advise you don't want renewal for the next year. However, they are asking me for my policy back which I don't understand (surely they don't mean the current one and they won't be sending me a renewal one now I've cancelled will they?) and that they can't give me evidence of my NCD which I need for my next insurer until my current policy runs out. Has anyone else had this, if so, what are they on about?

You don't earn an extra year ncd till you complete the year claim free.

Sounds like they want the certificate returning (have you cancelled earlier than the policy end date ?)

Thanks Quentin, that makes sense re. the NCD. My policy runs out on 18 June so I advised them I didn't want to renew after that date. I think they have just sent me a standard letter which they would send someone cancelling after they had received the renewal. I think I will e-mail them to clarify.

Have you received your renewal invitation? Did it contain a certificate of insurance?

I would suspect the answer to both of these is yes in which case it is that certificate that they want back as legally whilst it is in your possession they are still potentially the RTA insurer of the vehicle. If you have already destroyed it then they will almost certainly want a wet signature on a statement saying you have destroyed/ lost it which is their get out for RTA insurer obligations

No, I haven't received a renewal invite, if I had, then I would have sent the Certificate back and that would be that. I wasn't expecting them to send me one now that I've given them plenty of notice I don't want to renew after 18 June. As I said in my previous reply, I think they've just sent out a standard letter which they would have sent to someone who HAD received their renewal. If companies treated customers like individuals and actually replied to what you wrote to them, these misunderstandings wouldn't occur.

Maybe they think you wanted to "cancel" your policy rather than lapse it?

In your opening post you told us you had "left" them, so maybe that's how they took your instructions, and would explain why they want your current certificate returning before they will complete the cancellation and let you have your ncd proof.

Get on to them to check.
