kids and oyster cards?

Hi

we are going to spend a week in Hertfordshire and intend going into London to do the sightseeing thing with the kids as they have never been there. We'll be going in on a Saturday and Sunday and then just the Saturday the next weekend. From the nearest train station to where we are staying(Berkhamsted) we can get a offpeak return ticket into London (Euston) (using our friends and family railcard) including a Travelcard(for zones 1 to 6) for the 4 of us(2 adults and 2 11-15 kids) for £32.50.

So that would be a grand total of about £100 for the 3 days.

I have a few questions - we don't need to get the kids or ourselves Oyster cards do we to use the Travelcards? Because from what I have read kids need photo Oyster Cards which have a £10 admin fee thus putting £20 onto the cost.

Is there such a thing as a weekend travelcard?

Is there anything we could look at to make this cheaper?

Thanks for any advice.

You use either Oyster or a paper travelcard and there is no such thing as a weekend Travelcard.

The only way it would be cheaper would be if you drove nearer to London and parked up in a tube station car park and got that in. You would have to factor in petrol and tube station parking costs. With Friends and family rail card children can purchase a zones 1-9 off peak TC for £2 each and a zones 1-6 adult travelcard would be £8.90 so it would cost £21.80 for TCs for you all.

On a Sunday a lot of parking restrictions are lifted and if you leave early enough and drive into central London you should be able to find parking on the roads, just be careful to check parking permit signs for times and dates even on the same road. The road opposite the Natural History museum has parking from 8.30am. Camden Lock market (which teen love) has parking a few roads away, if you are perepared to have a 5-10 minute walk.

Tabath, it might be a good idea to ask your question on the Public Transport board.

After a few years of travel to london I have only just found out that if you purchase a day travelcard and own either a network railcard (or family and friends railcard if you are traveling with kids) you can get one for £5.90 adult or £2 child. This only applies at the weekend and you all have to travel together, however this works out almost £2 cheaper than using an oyster card for adults (the childs oyster cap is £1.50 so 50p more for kids!) You can purchase these from the offices at any tube station (not the self service machines) and they cover underground,DLR,overground and buses and get you a couple of quid off I believe when you use the water taxis on the river.
