My best friend had a Focus and got rid of it because she said the MPG was really poor. Don't know which engine size. The most important thing to me is a car with really good MPG.
Did they have the petrol or diesel?

How many miles per year do you anticipate doing in it as a second car? Fuel economy may very well not be as important as you think...

About 20,000 miles per annum. I am spending an absolute fortune on fuel.

I used to run a 53reg Skoda Octavia 1.9 td - cost around £0.12 per mile and was very cheap to insure and tax and not bad to drive. Have a 3 series 320 estate now, slightly more to run but a load nicer to drive. I do around 20,000 miles a year.

You say your budget is £350 a month, how many months, 12, 24, 36 48 etc.....

Probably 48 months. I like to keep cars until they drop.

I am confused, you mention this is second car you want to get? yet you do 22k on the first car, thats alot of miles where will get time to do another 20k on this car?
We are looking to buy a second car. I currently do around 22000 miles per annum, mainly long journeys.

My two main requirements are that it has good petrol consumption as I really want to get my fuel bill down. I have 3 children, ages 15, 12 and 8 and want them to be comfortable so decent leg room is needed. Therefore, I don't want a really tiny car, just something which would seat 4 people comfortably (my 15 year old can sit in the front). Low maintenance costs would also be useful.

In an ideal world it would have 2 easily accessible cup holders, bluetooth and iPod connectivity.

Can anyone recommend a vehicle please?

    Thanks.

I think it would be good if you could clarify if this car will be the second car in your household or your second car after getting rid of your first car.

Sorry, I must have misunderstood your first post. I thought you were currently doing 22,000 a year and were buying a second car that would split this mileage with your existing car.

VW passat Estate Bluemotion. Great MPG and only £30 per year to tax, nice looking and plenty of toys should be able to get it in budget too depending on year i.e. get the year appropriate to your budget

That must be the fuel only cost right? I own an Octavia and and a fan, but the real cost per mile is probably 2 to 3 times that figure. Including depreciation my 2005 Octavia 1.9 TDi (PD) has cost me 37p per mile over the last 2.5 years and 21,000 miles (which is not as cheap as I'd hoped...)

DevilsAdvocate1 - you REALLY need to give people here some idea of your budget in order to get helpful replies.
