Bit concerned......

Hi there!

Just wanted a wee bit of advice really. I recently recived a mobile phone on an upgrade. Its a nice phone and worth a bit of money. I put it on ebay and its just sold for £300.
I am slightly concerned about the seller though. they have "bought it now" for £300 as opposed to bidding and they only became an ebay member today and have chosen to keep their feedback private.
It is a lot of money to spend on a whim and I am a bit suspicious. Am I being paranoid or does this all sound ok to everyone else?

The only joining ebay today starts big alarm bells ringing and that with the private feedback doesn't seem right. Have they paid through paypal, is their address confirmed, you could request their details through ebay and try contacting then to ensure their details are correct. I think you're right to be suspicious.

Be very careful. You may well get the "ship it to Nigeria", or you could get the "can I send you a cheque for XXX and then you refund me the excess" (cheque wijll then bounce AFTER you think it has cleared.

IF you do send it out, make sure you do it by registered post (or whatever it is called now!) so that it is trackable. If they pay by Paypal they will probably try to reclaim the money anyway through one excuse or another.

Perhaps you have noticed, there is no way that I would send it!

In future it may be best to only allow bidders with X feedback in the future, and also make sure you set it to UK bidders too. Sorry, do not know how to do this as I do not sell on Ebay.

Report them to ebay for false details. Relist your phone, personally I would tick the boxes must have a credit card on file and restrict it to UK bidders only. State on your listing that you only post to a UK confirmed address if they are paying by paypal.

You will now get an email purporting to be from Paypal saying they have paid. They will not have paid - go to Paypal and check (but do not click through if there is a link). They will then email you again asking if you have sent it etc etc. Welcome to the wonderful world of Ebay scammers. This is what puts me off selling on Ebay!

Beaten to the posting again - just shows how common this is!

There is an Ebay scammers board somewhere on here, not sure where. It is annoying, but it is also VERY common, I guess they might get the odd sucker sending the phone out, just be glad you spotted it in time! Report them and get your fees back, and hope you get a genuine buyer next time. They may avoid you now they know you are not stupid enough to fall for it (don't know if they work that way!) Good luck!
