Advice on woodburner installation please.

Hi

I am looking to install a Morso Squirrel 1410 in my living room which is about 5 metres square with 2.4m height and 2 external walls. House is 1970 build with cavity wall insulation and carpeted floor with void above concrete plate.

Have removed existing fire surround, liner, etc - please see image link.............

Fireplace void is 750mm high, 350mm deep and 620mm wide.
Am thinking of making good, plastering and fitting a floating oak beam shelf above the recess. I would removed the existing grey hearth and replace with a bigger hearth to allow the Morso Squirrel, dimensions 54.8cm high, 38.8cm wide and 41.5cm deep, to sit in front of the recess.

Chimney is Concrete tube (7.25 inches wide) 8.5m - 9m from lintel to half round clay tile weather top on chimney pot. Dining room has similar arrangement with pots sat next to each other on the chimney. I am thinking of buying this liner.............

General advice appreciated but reassurance needed on.....
1) chimney pot clay half round weather top will need replacing with proper chimney cowl
2) Is flue to rear of woodburner rather than top recommended
3) How far from front of wall does woodburner need to be for maximum efficiency.
4) How far in front of the woodburner should the hearth extend.

Any advice on woodburner choice, liner choice, yellow sandstone colour hearth material source, etc gratefully received.

This site will tell you all you need to know but it's worth pointing out that the work is notifiable to building control if you are doing the work yourself.

Thanks for the link woodburner - some very useful info there.

Sorry to others who read my original post - obviously the detail and questions blew everyone out.

Please can someone confirm that it is more efficient to have a woodburner forward of the fireplace insert than sat in the insert or partially in the insert.

Is there any efficiency/operating reason not to connect the flue to the back of the woodburner rather than the top?

  • If you have rear exit make sure T piece is used and enough space left for easy access to sweep otherwise stove will need removing to sweep.
A correctly fitted top exit flue will provide enough heat to the room, it is important to make sure the appliance is fitted to comply with all building regs as they can burn your house down or even kill you. I see many self installed wood burners most are very bad some deadly and a few OK.

Looking at the pics Rhino, it looks as though even a small stove probably won't have the right clearance behind the stove and to the sides, meaning it won't be building regs compliant and a reason a HETAS installer may not fit it! What distances will you have behind/to the side with the stove you want to install?

Also, the oak beam will be combustible and as such will need some kind of fireguard or be mounted pretty high on the breast.
