    Back up the contacts now then.The phone may continue to work OK, but if water has got in then corrosion may have commenced and will eventually kill it.

    The phone will do texts but not calls (will make them but recipient cannot hear) so it is not working properly.

    Probably time to upgrade his phone then!

    Thanks to everyone - his phone seems fine this morning and he has kept his contacts :)

    Sorry cookie, didn't understand your post but thanks anyway :)
    What I mean by that is that when you activate your Android phone you use a google account.

    If you throw away that phone, throw away the sim, take out a new contract and new Android phone that's completely unrelated to the old one, but activate it with the same google account, then all your contacts will be there again.
