I just received a call from a mobile (Three) on my BT landline. It was from a number I recognized, a friend. I couldnt hear him , just the background noise ,so I put down the phone. I tried to phone back 1 min later. The incoming call was still connected, despite me putting the phone down. I replaced the receiver again , properly as far as I know. Still after another minute the original call was still there. I unplugged the phone from the phone end, not the wall, still there.
Weird.
After 5 minutes am okay, call disconnected.
Any ideas.
Alan

yes, the originating caller holds the connection up, hence they were there each time you pick the phone up
I often put the phone down and move roomsEx forum ambassador

thats happened loads of times with me too. even if I pull the telephone call out they are still connected. The call terminates when their credit runs out usually :S0

BT's network specifications state:
"When a call is ended by the called terminal, the BT Network will detect an off-line condition and initiate a time-out process lasting between two and three minutes. After the time-out has expired, network initiated clearing is provided to the calling terminal. "
In English: If you hang up and the caller doesn't, the exchange will wait 2-3 minutes before dumping the caller.

Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
It's an accidental call from his pocket
change your name to something beginning with z, or remind him to lock the phone keys0 -
I've always thought this was dangerous if you are unable to use your phone solely due to an outsider's actions. What if an emergency call needed to be made in those 2-3 mins... not scaremongering, just considering...0

Hit recall and dial at the tone? (Hazzanet)
Thanks Crabman and Hazzanet , a very good and worrying point.
Will recall work. It says it is part of BT Select Services eg 3 way talking or call waiting which are chargeable. I have none of those. What about people who are not with BT ?

I don't know about non-BT lines as I have pretty much always had a BT line.
3 way calling is a BT select service, but is chargable per usage as well as being available as a part of a package. As you wouldn't actually be setting up a three way call (which is dial number, wait for answer, hit recall, dial second number, wait for answer, hit recall, press 3), I don't think you would be charged for making a three way call.
I think this situation could be likened to a call centre situation where they put you on hold to call a different department to get an answer.
If you hang up on the second call, your phone will ring again with the 'parked' call presented back to you. The parked call normally will hear the BT lady saying "Please hold the line" at five second intervals whilst you are making the second call.
Whilst Crabman has a point, I think the probability of this happening is quite low, so you would only have to resort to using this feature in "exceptional" circumstances.43580
