Sony USB hell, playstation store game purchase "trapped"?

Hi, I posted this yesterday evening but it now more of a technical query. Thanks
......................
Can I cancel a credit card transaction?
I earlier bought a playstation game via the playstation store using my credit card.
Unfortunately, it would appear my 12GB PS3 is unable to download the game as it doesn't have the storage space. I only had 1 game stored on it and even after deleting that and some of the iplayer stuff it still says not enough memory.
I've therefore paid £48 for something that I cannot download.
Update:
Arrggggggggg I today bought a USB thing called a Sony 550 gb HD-EG5
After much pratting around with it my PS3 finally recognised it after I first FAT32'd it, or whatever it was called on my laptop.
We despite it recognising it when I go back into playstation store and click download it still says "There is not enough free space on the system storage":mad::mad::mad::mad:
I spent 48 quid on this bloody thing, how can I get it to work, so £96 quid spent in 2 days and nothing to show for it.
I wasted 4 hrs pratting around with it! ' even tried going online to download game staright to memory stick but still no joy.

You seem to be jumping in feet first mate...
I just Googled 'PS3 memory' and this thread came up, 4th post down says you cant run games from an external device.
I don't know much about the PS3 but earlier post there suggest to me the only way is to install a bigger internal hard drive.
There is a link to a guide how to do it on the same forum.
It may even be that the hard drive in the sony external you bought could be taken out the case and used to upgrade the PS3 internal one, possibly!0 -

The 12GB PS3 doesn't have a hard drive, it's similar to the Xbox 4GB in that it has a small amount of flash memory. Also like the Xbox 4GB, you really to install an internal hard drive if you want to be gaming on the 12GB PS3 rather than just using it for media playback. The 12GB PS3 does have a slot for a hard drive so you'll need to buy the Sony PS3 mounting bracket and a standard 2.5in laptop hard drive. You don't strictly need the bracket as there's not much space for the hard drive to move around in but with hard drives being complex mechanical devices which can be easily damaged with a bang, I think it's worth having the bracket to hold it in properly.

:rotfl: I had assumed the op had mistyped 120GB as 12GB, good advice!0 -
thank you all.
So providing I can get a refund for this memory stick USB my best bet is to install and internal hard drive?
I think that is safer option than trying to dismantle the usb to get at the hard drive.
Well I'm sick to death of this bloody machine now LOL.
Well the person in Currys assured me this USB would allow me to download the game but seeminly it doesn't so I'm entitled to a refund right?
So are these internal hard drives and brackets a similar price, don't fancy paying much more £ out!
What is the likelihood of an internal hard drive fixing this problem?
Thanks _pale_0 -

Do the research before you buy, ask on the PS3 forums if anyone else has had to something similar but whatever you do dont jump in with both feet, double check and triple check that what you buying is what you need.
From what Johnmcl7 says it should sort the problem.0 -
thank you, well I spoke to the guy in Currys who then spoke to another Currys guy on the telephone who said this USB thing would work.
So that's 2 people at Currys who have influenced me in buying it, they make a thing of marketing themselves as "KNOWHOW" in store so if they've sold me something that cannot play playstation store games I'd say I'm entitled to get a refund. It's either that or I claim it is faulty.
I'll take full responsibility for buying the game when I didn't have available memory but I think a lay person seeking out self - marketed expert advice in store from the KNOWHOW and being advised by 2 "experts" to buy it gives me grounds for a refund when it later turns out that it cannot do what I required it to do.0 -
I wouldn't generally take any advice from PCW/Currys, they'll generally tell you whatever will get you to buy a product from them. I agree you you should be due a refund as they've mis-sold the product, unfortunately I can't find an official statement from Sony on this as that would be good proof to print out and take to the store, this is a thread from their own forums though:
http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Technical-Help/12GB-too-Small-using-external-USB-HDD-for-game-storage/td-p/17980970
That thread also has useful information on the parts you need to get the hard drive mounted, namely a mounting kit like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-PlayStation-Replacement-Mounting-Bracket/dp/B009CV1OVC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1355944596&sr=8-1
And something like this for the drive:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Momentus-OEM-Playstation-Compatible/dp/B001R4BBL0/ref=sr_1_5?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1369859059&sr=1-5&keywords=ps3+hard+drive
I'd normally recommend sticking with Amazon themselves for the drive although I can't seem to find any Amazon are actually selling at the moment. The reason I say that is that Amazon are usually very good for returns where as some companies can be a real fiddle getting a hard drive replaced.
In terms of the chances of this fixing the issue, it definitely will - I think these low capacity flash memory versions of the consoles are a bit of a con particularly with the PS3 which was designed to have a hard drive. Although people bought PS3's when the initially came out for their blu-ray capability where the lack of hard drive wouldn't have mattered, these days there's a wide range of cheaper 'smart' blu-ray players that can do the job much the same.

For what it's worth I bought an original PS3 which only came with a 40Gb drive which I've found to be more than enough even with several games installed etc. Perhaps you know someone who might be upgrading a laptop to a bigger hard drive and can spare their old one (afterall a small capacity drive like this is pretty much useless to PC users these days) and effectively give you a free upgrade - worth asking around?
