Just stopping by to say hi and good luck with your ventures in 2014. Your thread title caught my eye as 2020 is our mortgage free aim date, although if I can do it quicker then I'll give it a darn good try!

We also seem to be doing a lot of similar challenges although I'm doing the 52 weeks in reverse: starting with 52 and then reducing as the year progresses!

I'm also a list girl although I don't get away with presenting OH with lists either so I admire your strategy with that one!

Anyway, all the best to you in your MF plans :)

I am also starting the 52 week money challenge as I really need to teach myself how to save and put money away and this starts off as £1 in week 1, £2 in week 2 and so on until the end of the year.:)

As an alternative, you could adopt the 'pay yourself first' principle and divide the total sum into 12 equal chunks (which would aid cashflow as you'll know exactly what is going out each month) and set up a direct debit to a savings account so it goes on automatically on pay day?

I think our MFW date will shift TBH Habibiboo as it is now likely that we will move to a bigger property in the next 5 years with a bigger mortgage. I may have to add another five years on but 2025 doesn’t have quite the same ring to it as 2020. :rotfl: Good luck with hitting your goal too.

The monthly figure £114 looks scary Pavlovs_dog :( I am already focussed on saving as much as possible from my current account - £500 saves, £165 OP, £100 annual bills that on paper I couldn’t afford it. I was hoping that as the weekly figure rises my budgeting will get better and I will be able to squeeze an even greater amount each week from my budget. My plan was to start adding coins to a jar and then do transfers to my ISA as the amount increases. As I may be out of work in July this plan may fail

I have not spent any money yet this year but will need to pop to Mr S tonight as we are out of fruit and one of my goals this year is to gradually increase my fruit and veg intake from an average of 3 portions to somewhere nearer 7. I have a condition that means I should eat a very healthy diet and know I could and should be doing alot better:o

I have set up the DDs to go to the savings accounts and if I can stick to the budget I have set this month I will be able to transfer the first £500 to the savings account by the end of the month with another £500 going across before the 22nd of February.:D

I am taking part in the Janus Illusion on the DFW board and have set myself a teeny budget and separated the money into envelopes and it really seems to be working so far but will be tested when we have eaten the stores and lose focus in a couple of weeks or so or DH decides he ‘needs’ some extra spends.;)

I have not done anything yet towards the make £5 a day challenge. I do have a few things of DS to sell, he is growing like mad at the minute and clothes DMIL bought him 3 months ago are way too short in the arms. I can’t abide flea bay but will put them on a local kids selling page on Fbook. I don’t do Fbook either so will have to get DH to add it back on my phone.

    Plans for the weekend are:

    - another long walk as well as the usual shortish dog walk:D
    - 2 car loads to the tip (mainly cardboard from DH toys)
    - list freezers and store contents
    - Catch up with washing DMIL has done a few loads this week but still lots to do
    - all the outstanding ironing
    - tidy the bedrooms
    - DH to sort his wardrobe as its contents are on the floor to be 'sorted'
    - make soup and rice salad for lunches next week
    - declutter some more chocolate
    - order new kindle charger using xmas amaz0n voucher
    - use up/freeze the fresh bits in the fridge; mini potatoes, cucumber, bag of peppers, dodgy celery, swede & carrot, last couple of old bag of carrots, DS yogurts
    Save £10,500 - £2673.77 - 25.5%
    Pay off £7000 - £1743 - 19.4%
    Make £2021 extra income - £99.75

    - yogs were way past it so binned them, not sorted the rest yet.

I seem to have managed to keep on top of the tidying and kitchen this week, probably because I have had a day off mid week and was off at Christmas. I think the bedrooms and cupboard lists will have to wait until next week.

NSD today, turned down an invitation to join friends for tea but will not have one tomorrow as we will need to pay for parking when we do our walk. We are upping the miles tomorrow so will be wrecked when we get in but in a good way:)

Right off to make a cuppa and watch Taken 2. No vino for me tonight as I am 4 days in to Dry January:). May have some chocolate though, can't do without both, I'm not a saint:rotfl:

Had another walk yesterday, increased the mileage to 8.5 but DH was worn out last night as it was longer and much heavier going than we are used to. We are planning a shorter walk around a local NT site this weekend as we are members plus we can take DS (3) who has been asking to go with us. I will take a flask of soup and some home made lemon drizzle cake to stop us buying a yummy lunch in their caf!.:A

The car park pay machine was broken at the car park yesterday so saved £4 and had a NSD, my 5th of this year.:j

I have heard today that my secondment may not be as long as I was led to believe which means my redundancy may happen 3 months earlier than expected._pale_ This will really scupper my plans to pay mortgage #2 off without spending any of my redundancy money. We can afford to pay it on DH wage alone but I so wanted to clear it this year. If I use my small redundancy payout we could just about manage it but would have to start saving from scratch again and I really wanted to clear the loan AND keep the redundancy payout. Greedy I know:rotfl:

What I really need is another income stream but we don’t have a lot to sell and I don’t have enough free time to take on a second job. I need another £5k from somewhere.

Not a lot happening this week but I still have some jobs outstanding from last week:

    Freezer and cupboard list
Tidy up as cleaner starts again on Friday
    Clean kitchen floor
    Vaccum living room
    Change bedding
    Sort last bit of laundry
Nag DH to keep on top of ironing
    Use up/freeze veg
    Book DS booster
Take breakfast and lunch to work everyday this week 1/5
    Aim for 4 NSDs /4
    DS thank you cards
Keep off the booze (not hard as I can take it or leave it really)

    Oooo what a boring post.:o

Was a bit of a lazy moo yesterday and apart from making tea from stores/off the meal plan, making our lunch for today which used up some bits from the fridge I didn't do anything off my list.

I did manage to clear the kitchen and get DS to tidy up his toys this morning and told DH that we need to spend an hour tonight tidying/vaccuming. He did moan it was a mess so he has no excuse not to help really;)

I will find out on Monday whether I have def been made redundant unless I can pull the meeting forward to the end of this week. :(:( I did request it so it won't be a suprise when I have it confirmed although I think I am likely to

I checked the internet banking this morning and because I took out cash on NYE to try out the envelope system nothing has come out of my account but DD. It has only been a week but I do feel much more in control of the pennies. I just need to keep it going so I can save my first £500:D I am tempted to pay it over to the ISA now but I don't trust our ability to stick to the budget yet:rotfl:

We need some new stuff to dubbin our walking boots, gaiters and I have seen some Emma Bridge tins I would like to get to use as a bread bin and cake tins to keep my GF stuff seperate from the glutened stuff. I have got the christmas set of 3 and love them:smileyhea The boot stuff can come out of the food budget but the rest will have to be budgeted for next month.

Small shop and diesel needed today instead of tomorrow as planned as DH has finished the bananas. I am going to go back to Aldeee on the way home. I haven't shopped there in months, not since they opened the new bigger tesco near me and I got seduced by the vouchers:o

Finally made some progress today. I will tweak the meal plan tomorrow to see what I can use up. Went to Aldee tonight and really pleased with what I got for the money so I will continue to shop there.

I still haven't found the other £5k I was looking for yesterday ;) but after crunching some numbers I am confident we can pay everything on one wage and have a bit spare and I will consider approaching the loan company to restructure the balance over 3 or 4 years to keep the payment down and then when I am working again we can save to pay it off. That is if I am out of work for a while and don't get something before I am redundant.

  • I may have to borrow your NSD idea. One a week for me I think.

Happy new year and thanks for the blog: I find it really helpful to read.
