I don't think blowouts are common enough to carry another tyre.

Surely blowouts are rarer than slow punctures where the tyre picks up a nail/screw and you come back to it and spot the flat tyre?

So we're agreeing then? In your example, a slow puncture, the air compressor will easily get me to a tyre place and would be less hassle than changing wheels.

An air compressor (plus a more accurate tyre guage) is a necessity in my book so you shouldn't be off-setting this against the break-even. The gunk was under £10. This also doesn't take into account the extra space. I do take your point, and I do it out of principle rather than expecting to actually see any gains, but when this very websites tells you not to carry a load of stuff around in your car, I think getting rid of the spare wheel might be the biggest, heaviest bit of 'junk'.
I drove the car home, must've been about 8 miles. I didn't realise at the time that it had been the tyre, and kept driving but could feel it when I hit a couple of corners/roundabouts, so took it easy. Down to about 4 miles before I had confirmed in my mind that it was a puncture. No damage to the rim, the tyre was quite warm when I got home but no sign of any damage.

    £420 a year. What a bargain eh?

    For a Panamera! That's cheap!!

Ahhh! That's what a Panamera is. Just Googled it. Nice.

The other day, my brother in law was bumbling on about how he had a Panamera. I'd no idea what he was talking about.

    I thought he'd bought a new hat.

I use a bike pump to top up my tyres, so it would be an extra expense for me, but fair enough for someone that wants a compressor.

    Cheaper than I'd thought actually.

Strictly driving on with a puncture is illegal, and an officious road traffic officer could have given you a fine and points for that (see e.g. this thread.) Lucky for you that you weren't too far from home or you would have rather ended up stuck wouldn't you? Go on, sneak your proper spare tyre back into the boot, you know it makes sense ;).

Oh no, My current car has no spare, and nowhere to put one either, so that's not an option. If I had realised how serious the puncture was, and understood that there was no chance of repair, I could, of course, have used the gunk to get me home safely.
I've tried a bike pump, and a foot pump for car tyres, and that just takes far too long. How much is your time worth? ;-)

I wouldn't want to pump up a tyre from flat with a bike pump, but for top ups it's no effort at all. I'm talking about a decent bike pump like this guy is using:
