    NSD 13 yesterday :T

Spendy day today, £16.50 on food, most of which is earmarked for some batch cooking over the weekend, which should result in around 20-odd meals for the fridge or freezer.:)

I already have some HM pasta sauce on the go, in the slow cooker. Should get 5-6 portions, cost £1.10 in total, so around £0.20/portion:)

Out later, to help a friend celebrate his 65th birthday - or maybe congratulate him for living this long:rotfl:

I couldn't get to the shop to get the wok today-I'll go tomorrow. What an exciting life....I did get a few food items in a rather pricey shop that I wouldn't usually have bought. They were all at sale price though.I also got some toiletries to give as presents and that'll come out of my 'presents' budget. Not too bad in all.

I don't have a slow cooker but would you mind sharing your pasta sauce recipe? It sounds great value and I really should try making my own.

No more NSD here since Wed - picked up a few essentials in town yesterday, and a couple more bits today. Bit annoyed as I got some f&v from the market stall which has always been good value, but their prices seems to have shot up dramatically of late. Comparing the prices for a number of items, i could have actually got them the same, or even less at A$da.

Apricots were the same, special peppers were more expensive than the supermarket, sweetcorn was more expensive and looking at other items, bananas had gone up from £1 a bowl to £1.50 and their strawberries were also comparable to the supermarket. Bit of a shame really. :(

Need to do a 'proper' shop tomorrow but supermarket card topped up for that - fingers crossed I stay on budget!

  • NSD # 11 today, haven't done too badly considering I was struggling this time last week, I only need one more to reach target, so still possible. the fact we did a big shop from the joint account and then did a meal plan has definitely helped. will try and meal plan next week too so will only need fresh bits so should keep spends to a minimum to give me a good start to next month.

    Have a good weekend all.

Modesty B - Good news about your DD.

Thanks to all the updaters. :T

    Pasta Sauce

    Ingredients:
1 x red onion, chopped very finely
    2 cloves garlic, peeled
    pinch of salt
2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes (the cheapest you can find)
    1 tbsp tomato puree
1 stock cube (veg or chicken, according to taste)
    2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp dried basil (or fresh basil, if you are growing it for free)
    pinch of cayene pepper

    Instructions:
    - put a high-sided frying pan on a low heat, add the olive oil and onion, and cook very gently for 10 mins until softened.
    - with the flat side of a knife squash the garlic cloves, add a pinch of salt and crush and work together to create a paste; or just chop the garlic really finely
    - add the garlic paste to the onions, cook for another minute or two, then add the chopped tomatoes, tomato puree and cayenne pepper, and crumble in the stock cubes
    - mix everything together really well, and either:
    - simmer on a very low heat for 20 minutes
    - or, if you have a slow cooker, set on Low and put everything in for an hour or so

Serve with your choice of pasta.:)

    Good morning folks:),

Apologies for my absence again, as my internet dongle has a mind of its own and decides when it is going to let me get onto the internet, never mind post:mad:. I did try to post on Wednesday & Thursday, but it had decided to take a few days off! I have managed to exceed my target again and wish to declare NSDs 13, 14 & 15 for Wednesday, Thursday & Friday:beer:. I hope everyone is well and looking forward to a nice weekend:). My Dad is currently in hospital and we are waiting on test results to come back, although thankfully he seems to be much better last night than he was on Thursday:).
Spoony, my target of 12 was correct at the time you asked everyone to check their totals and thanks to you and everyone else who does the updates:T.
I'm going to make an industrial sized lasagne for the freezer:eek:
