Getting my first cat (PICTURES)

When I picked my cat I had to blank out all the lovely, friendly cats crying for attention, because I was adamant I wanted to get one of those cats who are left behind, like a black cat, or a shy cat.
The cats that have adapted better to the pen or foster home will be friendlier, while those who are more traumatised, nervous or don't like being confined will not look as friendly in those circumstances.
Our cat was hiding and we would have walked past, but when we met her, once the pen door was open she was doing the same as your cat.
Just wanted to mention that people may want to think that there are lovely, affectionate cats that find it more difficult to find a home.
What lured me in was the insanely evil glare I got from her hiding in the back of the cage. She was the last of the litter and the others were cuter with lots of white patches. She bit everyone who tried to pick her up, but apart from a couple of playfull nibbles she's been fine with me.
She even followed me upstairs when I went to the spare room for a nap. Fell asleep while she was exploring the room (her first time in) and woke up with her draped across my forehead asleep and purring.0 -
Kittens/cats are like kids, you need to proof everything. You do need to get her out asap and check her paw to see what damage she might have done. Even if you have to drag her out, you need to check right now. Scruffing by the back of the neck to get her out, not dragging her by a paw, or tail >.<
Is it electrical/gas or a solid (coal/wood) fire?
Perhaps look at getting a baby guard for in front of it if she keeps on being interested.
She came out and showed me her paw a min ago and there is no damage I can see. She's not crying so I think it's ok, she normally lets me know if there is something wrong
It's a gas fire and its set as low as it can go. We are only using it this week as the boiler is being replaced soon.0 -
Oh good! I'm thinking it's more of a flash heat than a burn, like we'd get if we waggled our finger over a candle flame. If possible just put something in front that wont catch fire to kind of hide it, or ask on your local freecycle/freegle if anyone has a fire guard to lend for a week or so asap.
She really sounds like she knows who her saviour is, be prepared to have a cat for life that will dote on you!0 -

Just hope you don't end up with a Ninja Cat !
Mine at the mo has a habit of jumping on my head with a noise similar to 'EEE YAAh' before jumping down to the bottom of the bed and biting my feet, which isn't nice as I have now put my summer weight quilt on and her teeth can get through it !
Mine is not a cuddle cat at present, she is 'I will fuss around you until you feed me, then go and run havoc ' She is curious at all the electric cables at the mo, I can't hide them, so am on defensive mode 24/7. She is cute, but a Horror !
Where did you get her from? Mine was from Freshfield 12 months old and had already had kittens, found in a shed. Lovely but she is going to be a mouser. I lost my shaving brush for 4 days, found it in her 'Lair' with no bristle left ! lol0 -
Lovely little kitten there.
Just be careful of the litter tray being near her food/drink bowls. Some cats won't eat if near their litter tray. They are not like Dogs.0 -
We know! Every time she gets scared she has bolted under the sofa, though waving the string monster toy on the floor soon fishes her out.
I also learned not to wear socks with green tips, as she also keeps trying to save me from the toe monster.
I'm sat cross-legged on the sofa and she's sitting in the hole grooming herself now, I'm really happen she has taken to me so quickly.
She still hasn't left the small part of the L shaped room yet, so there is a whole other world out there for her to discover, and a second floor when she makes it up the stairs.
Should I leave it a couple of weeks before letting her outside? (its a closed courtyard surrounded on all sides with a 3 story building so no chance of escape)
I wouldn't let her out until she's been neutered and microchipped, with up to date injections (unless she already is). No matter how high you think it is, some cats really can jump up high! For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMaZ4WAmc1c
Have fun with your new kitty

That picture was from her fist day when she was still too scared to leave the library, now her litter tray is there and her food/water is in the kitchen. She's been happily eating and drinking once she got more confident.
Morti is also from freshfeilds (Liverpool), she was a litter from a 12 month old black cat who was adopted herself along with the other kittens (different homes). Morti was the last one left. I think that is why she is so cuddly, she misses her mum.
She would rather sit next to you than on you, so the warmth is at her sides, I think it reminds her of cuddles with her litter. Her fave spot is the hole when I'm sat cross-legged as its warm all the way around.0 -

She just rolled on her back while we were playing, and I noticed for the first time there is a small white patch between her back legs. It's a triangle, and because of the place it looks like she's wearing a white bikini :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0
