I don't really see a problem. The main use for the car is short local journeys which rules out a diesel. Think about local journeys and you are limited by the lowest common denominator - the slowest driver on the road - whether that is an OAP, a HGV etc.
The other use for the car is long occasional long trips. I don't see a problem with the car cruising at 70mph. Sure it's going to suffer a little on long inclines and take longer at getting up to speed.
We seem to have a mentality on MSE whereby someone mentions a motorway journey and the knee-jerk reaction is "Ooooh! You need at least a 2 litre car (and normally a Mondeo).
As an example we have a BMW 5 series, Mazda 5 and Corsa 1.4. When we go away we don't always take the most comfortable car but the car most suited size-wise for the journey. We've made loads of trips to Northern England in the Corsa and found it perfectly comfortable. I'm more than happy to use all 6,500 revs accelerating to whatever speed if I have to.The man without a signature.0 -
