I gather most of you just work 9-5 Mon-Fri?

I often worked 6am to 10pm for about 30 years, and mostly 6 days a week. Even before online banking became prevalent, this allowed me to go about my personal finances without any major issues.

Despite the banks working very weird hours back in the 80s - - shut on Wednesday afternoons, shut by 4.30 pm sharp every other day, never open before 9.30 am, and anything deemed unusual needing an appointment by the then ever so important Branch Manager. And no telephone support, not even from people who don't understand you and whom you can't understand.

Oh, and I did have a lunch hour here and there, and/or holidays if I needed to attend to private matters. I don't work any longer now, but I gather this is still the case.

Plus, with the advent of the internet, we have vastly improved service - - - why do we need 24 x 7 access to people who cost a lot of money?

I've had to ring RBS at 12.15am before when some money I transferred from another account didn't go in...I work shifts so I'm usually online around about now.. tomorrow morning at 12.08 am my wages will hit my Barclays account and I'll be shifting my money around and paying bills etc. The majority of my money goes to my RBS account so its comforting to know I can ring them if theres a problem.

Horses for courses is the phrase I believe, not that I'd call any of you good people a horse you understand :)

I used to work either 9-5 or 2-10.30 Mon-Fri and weekends too 2 weeks in a 5 week shift.

This made me a bit of a nocturnal person and so I used to come home and sort stuff out although I think I only had to ring Smile (who I banked with at the time) once as I wanted to know why a payment I'd made to my credit card was taking so long to go through.

More recently I ordered a pizza one evening from a well known company that delivers to your door but I got neither a confirmation page nor an e-mail so I rang First Direct to see if the authorisation went through on my debit card and they were able to tell me it had which would have been the case for all the other banks with 24/7 CS

I don't qualify for a current account with them :(
What reason did they give ? Have you tried recently ? They have just relaxed their rules a bit .

Can anyone confirm a UK bank that doesn't offer this?

    The vast majority certainly do.

I wasnt aware that any didnt either though looking at HSBC it is only the package accounts that get 24/7 telephone support and the basic account is 08:00-22:00

Of cause one the challenges is that just because there is a human that answers the phone doesnt mean you can do whatever you want as many have specialist departments and those dont operate 24/7

True enough but for routine stuff and info it can be useful.
