tyre repai/slime/the AA
Apologies if this is covered elsewhere-but first time i have ventured onto the motoring forum.
My wife had a puncture-repaired on site by AA with 'slime' instant repair
(and we are grateful to the AA accordingly who gave good service at the time )
a bit frustrating that they then made a biggish issue about how the puncture can be repaired and it will not need a tyre and how a 'slime temporary repair is repairable and does not need a new tyre-gave us lots of leaflets etc.
Needless to say-have tried kwik fit/halfords and two independents who all say they will not repair a 'slime' repair and AA are wrong.
A bit annoying as it is a newish tyre-would not mind if AA had said from start it is non repairable -but made a big thing of it-and it seems we will afterall have to pay for a new tyre and not a further repair.
Has anyone encountered similar-or better still had a tyre repaired that did have a 'slime' repair.?
are the AA simply wrong ?
many thanks

The reason they wont repair is because the slime spills out and makes a mess.
The slime is water based and contains latex rubber, I'm amazed that it worked, I've had loads of punctures with slimed tyres and they just leak, although the slime does show where the puncture is!
It needs cleaning off the inside of the tyre before the patch can be stuck on.
As it is more work and messy, Kwikfit won't do it, but no actual reason not to.
Don't you have a spare wheel?I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

I've used the stuff and our local tyre fitter has no problem at all repairing tyres it's been used on. As facade says, it takes a bit more work (all of a couple of minutes washing it out)
I'd think twice about using anywhere that's unwilling to put that little extra in anyway - are they going to bother even cleaning the rim up properly (which also takes a little time) or will they just slap the tyre onto whatever's there leaving you with a slow leak?0 -
Awful stuff. Makes changing the tyre a real pain as its so messy. A lot of garages won't touch a tyre once this stuff has been used.0

Thats a bit of generalisation, just because the rim isnt cleaned doesnt mean you will definitley have a slow leak which is what you are implying.
I do agree though it is a good idea to try an independant0 -
I have used Slime on punctures and never had a problem getting a repair done.
Unlike Tyreweld it just washes out quite easily.
As Joe Horner said, above, avoid anywhere that doesn't want to spend a couple of minutes washing out and cleaning up the rim properly.0 -

If a puncture repair would be illegal on a tyre without slime, then it would still be illegal to repair a similar puncture in a tyre that has slime in it, otherwise there is no technical reason why a tyre can not be repaired after running with slime or similar products inside.
Garages do not like it because it does them out of business and many have carried out a propaganda mission against similar products for years, purely because these products cost them money.
I've used it for years as a safety preventative measure ( less risk of all punctures , including high speed motorway ones) and if it's good enough for MOD vehicles in war zones , then it's good enough for me, personally I Run it in cars and motorcycles and wouldn't dream of towing a caravan or trailer without it being in there as well. Any garage that refuses to work on tyres fitted with it, gets no custom from me. If their customer policy is to turn me away, there are always more honest places to buy from0 -

The point is, if they don't clean the rim then they're increasing the chance of a poor seat. It's generally sloppy workmanship which you, the customer, may well end up paying for (in inconvenience if not cash).
In virtually any engineering getting things (appropriately) clean is an essential part of the job - an unglamourous part, but still essential. If they're not willing to do that bit, find someone who is!0 -
genuine thanks for the interesting and varied responses.
for those who have had a slime filled tyre repaired-have you used a national company to repair-who?
or anyone know an independent in gloucester/bristol area whowil repair ?
thanks again in further anticipation0 -

I never use a national company for either buying or repairing.
Regarding Gloucester/Bristol, look on the Internet for the forum for the owners club of a car that enthusiasts drive (eg Mazda MX5) then look for the group in that area and ask there. I'll bet they know all the best independents in the area.0
