Not irrelevant at all (to the thread - maybe irrelevant to the problem), read #5.

This problem is not caused by spyware programs or changes to your browser security settings. Many users found that they had these sort of problems when the forum was changed. Doing Ctrl + F5 forces your browser to fetch the latest files used to make up the forum pages, rather than using old out of date files that may be stored in your computers cache. Good general house keeping like the regular running of a program like ccleaner should help with problems like this. It is also possible to set your browser to fetch the latest info every time that a webpage is visited although not having this checked will speed up surfing as less has to be downloaded to view the page.

Ok I first tried clearing tif with the browser still open on mse, it did not fix the problem, I closed the browser, opened again came to mse and still no fix (despite having to re log in.)

I posted above that I was going to retrace my steps. I closed the browser then deleted tif, then came back to mse and logged in again. and now the problem has fixed again, hence I thanked Espresso above.

This cannot be right that so soon after clearing the tif the problem returns.

BTW I have 2 methods of clearing tif, first I delete all of the folder
    C:\Windows\temporaryinternetfiles
that is stage one, but it does not clear all the tif there is a secret folder on my 'puter called
    C:\Windows\temporaryinternetfiles\content.ie5
clearing this folder is what I call a complete clearing of tif (on my computer) - it does not apply to all versions of windows.

The first time post #9 I did tif clear 1 and tif clear 2 aswell as clear.....
    Windows\temp
    Windows\recent
    Windows\applog

This time as I say I did not close the browser before clearing tif 1 and it did not fix the problem....even when I closed and re-opened the browser.

Then I closed the browser and cleared tif 1 and it did fix the problem.

So here I am waiting for it to happen again.....so I can try this ctrl F5 thing.

Basically the Ctrl + F5 forces it to re-load that particular webpage again, using the latest files from the forum. If your ISP was caching files for you, this may not work. You may need to do this a few times, until all of the newer (modified) forum files have been downloaded. Therefore, if by doing the Ctrl + F5 that page then loads and functions correctly (Smilies, Editing, Thanks etc), it is due to old files stored on your machine.

I too started to experience all this after the site changed recently, and followed the thread started on it. I cleared the cache as instructed but it made no difference. On other's advice, i changed to Firefox, as David has already said. Works as normal now but I haven't yet got used to Firefox and keep shutting it down by mistake!

It happened again not long ago, ctrl F5 did the trick. I don't think it has anything to do with my computer, it is obvious the programming of the site is not compatible with Internet Explorer.

So how come only a very small percentage of users with badly maintained computers have had these problems?

Never had any of these problems here using both IE or Firefox, so as said above, get a new puter or learn how to use the one that you have.

Explain why it does it then, clever clogs. I don't see why the tif files should affect the running of this single website amongst all the other websites that I visit.

People have said in this thread it only occurs in IE not firefox, that indicates a compatibility problem between this website and IE - possibly on certain versions of windows or certain versions of IE.

It does it on mine even though the cache is cleaned 5 mins earlier.

It's not to do with a faulty PC or not knowing how to use it; it's about caching a corrupt copy of the stylesheet or other files.

MSE was just occasionally sending out faulty ones before, and people using proxy servers (hence comments about at work or university, but not home) were picking up that fault stored the proxy's cache, even when the MSE site was no longer sending the bad one.

I was having this with the Onspeed compression/acclerator program, but it hasn't happened to me recently.

If you can, switch off or bypass the proxy, then press ctrl-F5 and re-enable.

If there's no proxy involved, ummmm, sorry I'm no help

    Thanks Redux,
Glad I'm not the only one who realises it's nothing to do with a faulty PC or knowing how to use one.

I am having this trouble at home, and no proxy at my end, at ntl's end that's a possibility. But proxy or no proxy the faulty files will be sent by mse to my cache and then the problem will arise until I clear the cache. Isn't that right?
