Thanks to Op for this, got all my Florida holiday money sorted! There are lots of branches open Sunday and Monday, worth ringing around, my 2 local towns have 2 or 3 branches of Thomas Cook and at least one in each town is open over the weekend. May be worth considering the Travellers Check Card (like a debit card which you pre-load with money)which cost an extra £5.00 (special offer at the mo) so you don't have to carry lots of cheks with you, but, the card expires after 3 years.0 -
great suggestions!
I need some money for an upcoming trip.
So do I just go to a local TC tomorrow or monday and ask to exchange british pounds to traveller's cheques? can they just debit off the money from a debit card?
Is this travellers check card worth it vs cheques? sorry never odne it before so just curious..
thanks0 -

I would use travellers cheques they are accepted like cash in USA, I haven't used the prepaid card but have heard it has some drawbacks, https://www.thedibb.co.uk has a really useful chat forum about holidaying in USA anf I know they have discussed the prepaid card on there and some weren't happy with its t&cs.0 -

I went for the cheques rather than the card as you can use them like cash- the only difference is you have to have your passport with you to countersign the cheque. Then the retailer gives you your change in cash.
I was told by Thomas Cook that you cannot buy the ravellers Cheques by credit card. If you buy these cheques with a debit card, be aware that some card issuers do charge you for the transaction (up to 4%) as they regard it as a foreign currency transaction. Apparently the only ones that will not charge are the cards with "switch" or "maestro" on them0 -
rubbish. i don't have £1000 in cash on me right now so maybe this isn't that good a deal after all.
also can i just take the cheques to my local branch in the UK and have it converted to cash? would it work the same way? Or in the US, have it changed to cash?0 -
Anybody in Milton Keynes want to halves?
Don't need £1000 worth but £500 would be ideal!if i had known then what i know now0 -

If you buy currency with a CREDIT card you will be charged a fee, if you buy it with a DEBIT card you shouldn't be charged a fee.
You can use travellers cheques like cash in the US, when you pay with one you get change in cash.0 -
Hi,
Just looking at the T&C on my Barclays connect debit card. It says:- Obtaining foreign currency or travellers' cheques
anywhere other than a Barclays branch or website
or via Barclays Travel Line. 2% (min £1.50, max £4.50)
So if I go to Thomas Cook, and buy the offer - £1000 worth of travellers cheques, I will get charged £4.50?
Sorry if I seem dumb, but don't want to do it and get charged more than that!!!0
