Is it possible you were not showing as on the electoral roll at the address when you applied for the basic bank account 4 months ago?
I believe that is what the credit check with a basic bank account would be used for, to verify your address information.0 -
I'm pretty sure we are on the electoral roll but perhaps there was a problem I will look into it tonight.0

This is really it. If the OP had applied to a rival lender they would likely have succeeded. The incentive there is that this may result in a migration from using Barclays products to theirs.
Barclays have no incentive to offer this account when the OP already has a current account and multiple other accounts with them. They may have been deemed ineibigle as soon as the check detected an account on their books already, although that would be unlikely if the OPs spouse already has a Barclays current account.0 -
I wanted to open a basic joint account with my partner, she was approved for it but I wasnt.0
