I would ring immobilise.com (or checkmend.org) tell them your situation. Then ask them WHICH insurance company had the mobile blocked.

Then ring them up and tell that insurance company that the guy who sold it to you.

    They'll send the bailiffs round!

If that doesn't work there's only a few companies that do mobile phone insurance - ring them up and ask them!

What have you told the seller so far? Tell me exactly what you said and what he said and we'll try and figure something out!

It is possible to change the IMEI of phones - but this is highly illegal.

If you contact the insurance company and report having a stolen phone then guess what, the Police will call round and take it off you. In reciept of stolen goods, it does not matter that your 'bought' them - you dont own them. The seller could be a fence - not some guy trying it on with his insurance company.

However, blocked phones only fail to work on UK networks. If you get stumped from the seller, it will be posible to use the phone abroad. You could try re-selling the phone outside the UK. But again, if this is stolen property - then you are breaking the law.

His friend has a Paypal receipt yeah?

    And an ebay item no?

SO actually he is REPORTING A CRIME! The insurance company would be really happy if you told them - it would save them a couple of hundred quid!

Tell that to the people who buy £20k stolen cars and then have them returned to thier owners by the police. Crime or not - if its stolen property his friend will loose the phone, and then paypal (being paypal) will refuse to refund the money as he didnt post the phone back.

I dont see how telling the insurance company is going to help his friend. They will want to recover the stolen phone.

Yeah but he can claim his money back FROM paypal!!!!!

If I was you this is what I would do. Don't be agressive towards the seller. Ask him nicely where did he buy it from etc.

The you should be able to narrow down your choices about which company is the insuracne with!

14 year old daughter lost her phone on the train.

We've had it blocked and would hope that whoever buys it does report it, so that she can get it back. After all it's still her property, not the thief's or whoever buys it from him.

Personally I'm appauled that people don't want to do the decent thing for fear of losing out.

You're not getting the picture. It's the guy that he bought it off that blocked it.
