British Telecom

Does anyone know if British Telecom now "report" accounts to the CRAs like Mobile Phone companies and Virgin Media do?

Our British Telecom Account is still in the name of my Late Husband who died in 1995 and I recently got copies of my Experian and Equifax files for £2 and there are no active accounts showing.

So if they are "reporting" the account will it be under Percy's name?

  • Does British Telecom even still exist as an entity? I only ever see references to BT nowadays.

Well if you was a customer of BT you'd know they just go by BT
  • OK BT. And I have paid the bill on time all the while so no its isn't what you say. I just wondered if it really affects credit files. At the end of the day as long as the bill is paid I guess I am sure BT (British Telecom) don't care.

Incidentally when I write the cheque it says on the bill to make it payable to: British Telecommunications plc

I have some experience with this and no, they don't...I was a BT customer and it has never been on my credit report.

Crumbs. A company that actually doesn't grass your payments to CRA's. That's a novelty then.

Quite hypocritical of BT considering to even get service from them they perform a credit check.

By agreeing to take service from BT you also agree to allow us to share your payment history data with BT with credit reference agencies. If we choose to do so we will share your personal data under contract and in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 with recognised and reputable credit reference agencies such as, for example, Experian and/or Equifax.

Don't think that means they always will report data, but they can if they want? Think some utilities and the like only report if you default?

If were to be in default then would become a question of fraud.

It would only become that if I didn't pay it. If I couldn't afford it I would have it cut off anyway before it got to a default stage.

Utility companies are beginning to share customer payment data with the credit reference agencies as it helps them make better informed decisions about new and existing customers, so this is certainly something you should expect to see in the future. An organisation can only carry out a full credit check if it shares details about its own customers.
