Would it not be easier to buy online at home or write the book name down then check at home and go back to shop if you still want it.
Tell me about it!:D

Thanks for the goodreads suggestion - but the database is over 4000 records - and I don't fancy having to key in all that again! Plus, living in the wilds of Cornwall, you very often don't get any signal so anything that involves connecting probably wouldn't work.
So, if I can source a secondhand smart phone, I could just load the latest version of my word doc on it?
thanks again all.
Ah thats alot of books, yes there are free office type programs tht will let you read documents, could even try uploading it to google drive and then download it your phone and view it offline via a file manager.0 -
If you stick it into google docs and update it that way (either as you add books online, or copy paste from the doc file when you update that) you can view that on smartphones via some apps that will work with google docs. Ideally a search function would be better to stop you having to "page flip" if you store alphabetically. For updating both ways I say use a note app that allows google doc syncs (not google drive for file storage) You can then add it in your phone, and thus have it update online next time you sync, and vice versa if you update online it'll push when you sync the app.
Think it's time to get into smartphones, or an old pda. Smartphone would be the easiest way ahead, more modern way. Always research the smartphone before as you will need to use a note app (probably paid for) to keep copy for offline, and thus need things like a proper smartphone os on it. Some of the very cheap "smartphone" mobiles are not suitable, but you also wont need to pay a lot. Check out the mobile phone section on the forums and start a thread there about a cheap smartphone with google play capabilities, and list some prices you're willing to pay and see what comes back. Also decide if you want contract, or payg. You will probably need to change your mobile tariff as it wont have data and to fully benefit from a smartphone out and about you need data allowances,.0 -
How about rooting a Nook Simple Touch e-reader (£29) and loading an appropriate android app. You can even connect it to Dropbox. Probably the cheapest 'tablet' you can get.
Not actually done this; don't even have the Nook. But hopefully soon :j0 -

Krishna, if that works, you're a certified genius:T I have literally, a day ago, been given said Nook as a gift but didn't realise this could be done. Are you planning on doing it?"When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes" - Erasmus0 -
That's quite a nice idea, if you don't mind a bit of work

Taking one device, and changing it to make it work better is fun! Just done an old ZTE Blade to use as a sole mp3/media player and it's worked out quite well with a new rom on it.0 -
You may not have a smartphone, but some old school phones can run basic apps, such as database viewers.

At £29, just buy another one to play with! (slaps hand, not terrible mse I'm afraid, but you could always pass one on as a gift in the future, or sell on ebay if the official update doesn't pan out very good)

Can you save the document on your computer as a pdf (Word can 'print' to a pdf file)? If so, this might be interesting. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.
Wth every precious smile you make. And every act of kindness.
