Tomatoes in bags
Mr Pixiechic loves tomatoes so I have bought some plants. I did quite well growing them last year in growbags with the extra pots in for more room.
This year, given that the consensus seems to be that they need more room, I have bought some large 60 litre bags of compost.
What do I do? Cut the 60 litre bags in half and plant the tomatoes plants in them like that? Do I cut holes in the side or the bottom?
Thanks if any advice

I've used the Morrisons flower buckets successfully the past few years. This year I'm doing a few like that but I've also got some growbags and growpots to try as Jim from the Beechgrove Garden recommended them :-)0

Thank you, in the end impatience took over and I made a pigs ear out of the first attempt
but the second attempt has gone well, phew!

Places like B&Q sell large buckets for ~£6, about 50L I think, which would be ideal for some veg, maybe even a courgette which likes space.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0

Hi - if I grow toms in bags, I will cut them ( the bags that is) in half across the short width - then stand them on end, like a large pot. Then make a few holes a few inches from the bottom, stick a support in - hey presto. Also, when planting toms, always remove lower leaves & plant 'up to their necks'.
The little hairs on the stems, then form extra roots, & make a far sturdier plant.
Good luck, there is nothing nicer than a home grown tomato.
you cannot buy one, however much you pay!!When I married 'Mr Right', nobody told me his first name was 'Always'. ::rotfl:0 -

Macma, I love looking at people's gardens and ways of organising things. Your greenhouse is great, I want mine like that, when I get a bigger one!
Wattapain, I have now finished clearing up the mess I made earlier, I split the 60 litre bag, just the wrong way. Luckily I had two more bags to go
Thanks for the container options, I was in b and q earlier, wish I'd picked up some buckets there, thanks Leif.
Arbrothlass, I don't think I have a Morrison's near me but I will see, thanks.0 -
The green container at the back has 2 sweet peppers in it was a freebie, the local council contacted our allotments and offered as many as we wanted. They were recycling bins and they were changing them.0
