Renting a place when on benefits

Just what planet are you on?? I earn an ok-ish wage and I can only just about swing running a 1 bedroom flat by myself. And thats without a massive sky package or a car or constant nights out. Why on earth should I have to work 40 hours a week (which to me is a fair exchange for my privacy and peace) when someone can get the same just by sitting round on JSA? And yes, before anyone says it, I have lived on JSA before, and no I wouldn't have been able to afford my 1 bed flat and didn't expect to.
Too bad if you don't want to share with strangers, millions of people have done it as students and millions more still do it into adulthood. Its not like some kind of Orwellian nightmare where you are assigned housing, if you end up living with a bunch of d!cks thats your own fault for not properly interviewing who you intend to move in with. And with a standard 6 months tenancy its not like you're stuck with it forever.
I Agree.
When i was in an old job working, i couldn't afford a 1 bedroom house for myself, and i know lots of people who still can't. I can just about afford one now, and im on 30k a year0 -

One thing I hate about these forums is the large number of people who love to throw attitude about, shoot people down and be downright rude!
Huh? Really?? Tbh that really isn't how I read any of your posts on this thread..monty-doggy wrote: »Gosh that's awful. How on earth can you be expected to house share? My circumstances were not my fault, and I got a job within four months of being on benefits. To be expected to live in such a paltry way of life is shocking. No wonder this country is on its way to ruin!monty-doggy wrote: »In addition what's the likely hood that the people you end up sharing with are drunks/drug users/ benefit scrounges/criminals or god knows what else? The point I am making is that every set of circumstances is different and if you find yourself in that situation you shouldn't have to be put with people who are perhaps there by choice.monty-doggy wrote: »No need for sarcasm I am entitled as is everyone else to my own opinion. You got lucky, I am sure there are many who don't.
I really think you have a very clouded view on life now days, and how much things actually cost. And no not all house sharers are "drunks/drug users/ benefit scrounges/criminals or god knows what else", and I think a lot of people would be quite insulted by that view point.0 -
I think you will find I am far from clouded! I have a very real understanding of how much things cost and have worked much harder than most people to fight for what I have! Don't you dare judge me! You know nothing about me and as are you, I am entitled to have an opinion that I don't think you should HAVE to share just because you are under the age of 35! And I didn't label every house sharer in the uk, however I have had some bad experiences and I know plenty of people who have too. If you saw some of the house shares that I have seen then perhaps you would understand!0

Why does it always come down to 'if you had seen the things I have seen..' on the internet? We know nothing of each other, I nothing of you, other than what I see on my screen. Maybe I have seen worse than you, maybe I havent, who's to say? Certainly not you or I.
I didn't say you weren't entitled to an opinion, nowhere have I said for you to stop posting. I was simply pointing out that, regardless of your intentions, your posts weren't only expressing surprise at the new age limit, but also quite a small minded view of a quite a large percentage of our society. I also fail to see how I have blown your posts out of context, when I have fully quoted them and responded to exactly what you have said, not what I assume you to have meant.0 -
It seems the OP's thread asking for genuine advice for her friends has been hijacked. Maybe you guys could take your aggro elsewhere and leave this thread for posts that might actually help :cool:0

Don't mean this harshly, but this is a forum, people are also gonna talk around the issue, especially with a subject as already well covered as renting while on benefits.0

You are perfectly entitled to an opinion. What you are not entitled to is for the taxpayer to subsidise you having your own flat!! I was house-sharing at the age of 37 because I had no state subsidy and it was all I could afford! It didn't kill me... Nobody is forcing under 35s to flat-share. You can have the place all to yourself, you just have to pay any difference above the flat-share rate yourself, and possibly go without some other luxury. Nobody is forcing you to share with anyone, just saying that (god forbid) you have to pay for that luxury yourself!!DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244
