If you have a Windows PC which is fully up to date then get MSE http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/security-essentials-download If your PC isn't up to date you will be offered updates beforehand.

If you have Windows 8 it'll be called Windows Defender and should pop up automatically when you remove your present AV.

Make sure you remove your present AV before installing MSE.

    A second vote for Avast.

Here is a list of freebies. I use this site a lot.

RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

Avast is OK (used to be great) but it has very annonying popups and even though many can be disabled it still has the odd advert popup pretending to be about the program.

    If you don't mind that...

Can't say I've noticed ANY advert popups from Avast - and I've used it for years. The only popups I see are:

Alerts for viruses (e.g. when loading emails)
Alerts to update the program and/or virus defs
Alerts to update plugins like Flash

But then again, the popups that appear (above the system tray) are not intrusive to me. So if any adverts HAVE appeared I've not taken notice of them, so they've failed in their purpose. :D

I'm with bod on this, I've been using Avast for several years now, on both my home and work laptops, and have never seen any pop-up that is not related to Avast. If you are seeing other adverts then I'd be more worried about Malware than about Avast itself.

Im with bod and Arignall on this, Ive not noticed any pop ups with using Avast either. I've used avast many times and not had pop ups.

I get the 1 in the bottom corner to say its ready to update, oh and I get that 1 that mentions which programs need updating.
